Question about Panasonic DMR-E85H DVD Recorder

2 Answers

My Panasonic DMR-E85H DVR won't power up. Had been working fine, about six years old, didn't record my last timed recording, then wouldn't power up. Checked cord and outlet. What usually goes wrong inside the machine and what does a fix cost?

$50-70 sounds great, but "similar to the cost of a new one"? This is a $700 unit when new....are we talking about the same thing?

My DMR-E85H is a full blown DVR with a big hard drive and recording and playback capabilities, not just a cheap throwaway DVD player. I"m thinking there is probably a fuse link or power transformer inside that may have failed (?). It has been powered through a high end power control/surge protector.

This sounds like a reasonable scenario, given the unit's installation. I appreciate the help.

Azraelsrl, you were spot on, four capacitors and some labor and my DVR is good to go. Thanks!

In an unit of this age the first thing that fails is the power source (more specifically the filtering capacitors - they start to dry out), especially in a unit like this, with very little space inside for air flow and big consumers that generate a lot of heat.
If when the source has failed nothing else was damaged the fix will be quite simple and easy to do and al the replacement part will cost less than $40. To that you must add the labor - that depends on who is going to do the job.

Is it possible to buy replacement capacitors and solder them in myself. If its as simple as that I might be able to handle it. Where could I get replacements and what are the specs?
    Thanks,

Of course you can replace them yourself - just unsolder them, copy the specifications printed on their labels and order identical replacements from a good site like

    Azraelsrl -
You are correct! Our DMR-E85H DVR didn't power up at all - most likely a power supply problem. Removing the cover, hard drive, and hard drive caddy revealed the power supply
board with 2 electrolytic capacitors with crusty, brown deposits on their tops. The capacitors had swollen and the pressure release opened, allowing the electrolyte to evaporate.

We unsoldered one of the caps and tested it on an LCR Meter - only 122mfd - UGH!
The second cap was removed and tested - 56mfd - double UGH!!

It appears that the failed caps, C1260

I have the same problem with my unit. It won't power up. Hate to toss it and buy a newer one since this one model is highly regarded as one of the best on the market. I will find a panasonic repair shop and see if they can replace the caps for me since I am not an electronic genius.

Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. From what you have described the issue seems to be with its circuit board going bad and needs to be replaced. The cost to repair this will be around $50-$70 which is quite similar to a new one. Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or post a comment for further assistance.

Thanks

New hard drive

I would put in the same hard drive capacity especially on a ten year old machine, because the power supply could affect the capacitors on the motherboard and cause a short. Samsung hard drives work best with Panasonic hdd recorders.

I have a Panasonic DVD Video Recorder model DMR-E85H manufactured in 2004. It has worked perfectly for all these years but now won't power up at all. I have checked the only fuse I could find inside...

The power supply board is the problem, one of the most common failure is the 1000uf capacitor "open" located near the power transistor that is heat sinked, value may be higher or lower with one or two caps, the second possibility is the power transistor may be open or shorted.

Why won't dmr e85h pick up all the digital channels the tv attached to it will? Is it outdated technology? Do you need a digital set top box or completely replace the unit? Anyone...?

You most likely will need a set top box connected to this recorder in order to receive digital channels, Assuming the DVD recorder works besides this detail, you should not need to replace the unit. Only replace it if it DOESN'T work.

The DMR-E85H is a 2005 model so it is more than 5 years old.
