SOURCE: Pilot relighting Garland Commercial range

The main burner valve is the oven valve. The pilot will be next to the burner and you either have to insert a long shiskabob stick ( lit) into the hole or lift up on the bottom of the oven (inside) and you will see the pilot.

How do I turn off the pilot light in my Magic Chef 31000paw oven? I think when it stays on it is wasting gas.

I don't know. While half a century ago it was common that pilot lights would be permanently lit to provide instant lighting of oven and hobs, because they did consume a significant amount of gas they fell out of favour and spark ignition became reliable.

Amid a number of related and unrelated accidents the gas oven began to be seen as potentially dangerous and so they were fitted with a couple of safety devices so for a considerable time the pilot light has to be relit every time the oven is used and the pilot light will be switched off when the oven burners are turned off.

Thinking back a long time, the pilots of our old cooker could be turned off using a screwdriver to turn a central service valve hidden under the hob spill tray.

Our MAGIC CHEF gas range has a pilot light that comes on, the ignitor comes on, but the oven does not work heat. Any ideas would be appreciated.

First off, decide which you have, a pilot lite or an igniter coil. In electronic controlled units, when the oven won't light, as long as there's gas available, 98% of the time the igniter is bad, even though the old one may glow and seem to be very bright, it could have a small hairline crack in the ceramic, which would not allow the proper amount of electrical current to travel to the gas oven safety valve, which would then make it open and release the gas. A new igniter works almost every time.

Have a 1986 Fleetwood Park Model with a Magic Chef gas oven that will not light. The pilot is lit but the oven burner will not come on. Uses propane gas...it worked last year.

Propane is a "dirty" gas. That can sometimes result in a particle of debris getting lodged in a pilot orifice, causing a low pilot flame. Inspect the burning pilot, look to see that the pilot flame encompasses the thermocouple so that the thermocouple may get hot enough to open the gas valve. If the pilot is too low, sometimes tapping on the pilot assembly with some handy tool will dislodge any restricting particles from the pilot orifice and restore flame size. Make sure that the pilot or thermocouple have not been struck by some object and knocked out of place. If the flame and thermocouple seem OK, you may have a bad thermocouple. Before replacing the thermocouple, loosen and re-tighten it's connecting nut at the valve (follow the thermocouple "wire" to find the valve) , if the connection is poor, sometimes that will restore good contact.
Also to note: the pilot will be at minimum when the control valve is "off", the pilot flame size should at least double when the control valve is turned on. Be careful, that is gas you are working with.

Magic Chef range the pilot on the oven will not light.

Is this a manual lighting pilot,do you light it?

If so you may have a bad gas valve.

If this is an auto light pilot it could be the electronic spark is bad.Im guessing the popping noise is the autospark trying to light.

I cant find the stove top pilot

Electric Ignition (sparking clicking noise when control knob is turned to "light" setting) do not have pilots. The spark ignites the gas.

Pilot lit, ignitor glowing, oven will not light

A pilot light and a ignitor do the same thing. no unit would have both.

Perhaps you are confusing the thermo-coupling for an ignitor. An ignitor (glow plug style) is ceramic with a conductive coating on the end powered by electricity supplied by two high temperature coated wires that connect to the oven controller.

A replaceable thermo-couple looks like a copper tube with a elongated bulb at one end and a fitting at the other. The bulb is placed in the pilot flame and the fitting screws into the gas valve.

I am looking at a exploded diagram for the model number you listed. The unit uses a "safety valve" with the thermo-couple incorporated into it. To see the exploded view, click here If
you are asked for a model #, use CPL1100ADW. In section 2, gas controls, Diagram location 17 is the safety valve. Click on the part photo for a better view of the valve.

If you have any questions, let me know. Hope this gets your unit up and running again.

Please take the time to give this solution a fix ya rating,

I have a 1948 Magic chef gas oven.Model # 8620. The gas was turned off at my home and the pilot light on the oven went out. The gas is now on and I need to relight the pilot light. I am not sure on the ove...

You did say 1948, as in 60 year old range?
Well, gas ranges did not have fancy safety valves or things like that back then. Most likely when you turn on the gas, a small amount of gas begins escaping at the pilot orifice. Then use a long handled lighter to put a flame there. Pilot should light right away.

Pilot light out/will not go above 350

Sounds like the thermostat controlling the gas valve in the oven is not working, I’m trying to find if the oven igniter is electric, but believe the igniter is electric. If it does light then not regulate the temp above 350 degrees, I am convinced the thermostat control is bad.

Magic Chef CPR1100ADW

I just dealt with the same problem. On this model, the (already very compact) oven temperature control includes a pilot safety valve. With the control turned to OFF, push in on the knob while applying a lighted match to the pilot. After the pilot lights, keep holding the knob in for a few seconds. When you release it, the pilot flame should stay on.

Me, I'm interested in why the pilot went out in the first place and what to do if it keeps going out. IS there that repair manual (online or in print) that jvmagic was asking about?
