Hi.

To start ensure that you did reset the printer by disconnecting power cord for about five minutes. Test different kind of cartridges. Also try reinstalling printer software.
Ensure that you are using original non-refurbished Brother cartridges. You often get the problem even with different cartririges from same stock when using non original or refilled (and chip resetted) cartridges.

The cartridge is not being detected. This may happen for different reasons:

1 - The chip on cartridge is defective. Test using a replacement cartridge.
2 - Poor contact because of dirt on contact plate inside ink carriage. Clean the metal plate contact located inside the ink carriage, in the malfunctioning cartridge slot. Use soft cotton and isopropyl alcohol or circuit cleaning solution. Do not use water or detergent.
3 - Broken contact from print head. The contact at the back of print head may be broken. First test is done ensuring that there is continuity between cartridge slot contact and connector at the back of print head. Call service at the number listed on Brother owners manual if you are in this case.

Kindly remove the ink cartridge and blow a canned air or a blower on the cartridge nozzle where you take out the cartridge. Chances are, when you ran out of ink, air filled up the nozzle and thus the printer sensor recognized it as empty.

It sounds like the sensor is having an issue. For whatever reason this is fairly common with Brother printers. After replacing the cartridge please turn off the printer, then unplug it from the wall for a good 2 minutes. Replug and fire it up, then let me know if the problem persists.

Thanks
Tim

Hello there,

Have you tried reinserting the cartridges? Make sure also that the plastic was already removed.

Please try to clean the printheads. This problem could manifest a clogged printhead. You can initiate the cleaning from the printer preferences or clean it manually by wiping the electrical contacts only not the ink nozzle.

If this does not resolve the issue, consider replacing the printhead. This could be due to a defective one.

Hello Acerilli

Sounds like the print head is either blocked or defective.
Try cleaning the print head first to see if this clears up the lack of black ink.

Press the "menu" button and then scroll down to the "ink" option and press OK
Now scroll down to "cleaning" and select OK.
Select "Black" and press OK then Black Start.

Repeat this process up to a maximum of 5 times.

If this does not clear it up, try a "purge".

Press "menu" "black start" "0 7 6" in sequence as quickly as possible (within 5 seconds)
All the lights should flash and you will see "cleaning_all" on the screen.
Now press 3 and Black start.

If this still does not work and there is no black, the print head is defective and needs to be replaced.
If you are under warranty, you can check here for a service center.

If there is no service center in your area and you are under warranty, call brother for an exchange.

SOURCE: Brother MFC-465CN printer. Need a fix for error 46.

The problem is due to the fact that Brother machines excessively self-clean. Each time they self-clean a small amount of ink is dumped in to a holding tank/sponge. When a predefined number of self-clean operations have been performed, the machine refuses to print and gives the error message you have stated. Brother state that the tank/sponge must be replaced before the counter is reset, again by a Brother agent.

However, there is a way of reseting the self-clean counter yourself - if you Google your model number and the error code somewhere in the results you'll find how to do it. The only risk of doing this without changing the tank/sponge is that it will eventually overflow and leak out the bottom, but I did my Brother all in one some time ago and have had no problems yet.

False ink empty

Are you sure its exclamation mark?..
This warning message related to print head. (warn out). When you are replacing ink tube assembly use dummy print heads to do the priming (new ink tubes are empty & they have to fill with ink)..
Action: Remove all cartridges and print heads, switch on the printer follow the screen message.(Insert cartridges first next dummy print heads).once its recognizes cartridges then it switch over to print heads, insert dummy print heads. Once printer recognized the dummy print heads, printer will perform priming, during priming dummy print heads will filled with respective inks.(follow the display message)Remove dummy print heads & insert normal print heads. Wait till printer recognizes print heads, load the paper & wait till performs the calibration, once calibration is successfully done issue closed.
If calibration not successfully done, check align print out for which print head is not printed properly, replace it..
Pl ensure that minimum 50% ink levels required in cartridges before performing the priming. Best of luck..

Brother MF 5440CN USB Printer won't print. Says "Ink Empty Cyn" and then "Ink Empty Yellow" Replace Ink There is ink in the cartridges.

While there may be ink in the cartidges, your printer is getting a signal from the cartidge that it's near empty. There is no real workaround for this; you just have to replace the cartridge(s). If you use a LOT of ink, you might consider installing a CIS (continuous ink system) now made for most printers. You will save a lot of money over time.

What you describe is typical.

Brother Mfc-845cw and Mfc-465cn both stopped printing Black about the same time. Using Non brother Ink. Tried cleaning, replacing carts, unpluging maching. how can I fix this.

the black ink that was used in the refilled cartridges was probably to thick for the nozzels on the head, you can try buying the original cartridges and then cleaning again, or check with the store you got these cartridges from as some of them offer a warranty

Printer says no cartridge, but there is

I believe you have to press a key combination when the unit powers up to get it to recognize there are new cartridges in place. Check your user's manual on the correct sequence.

Does not print properly-even after installing brand new cartridge

most likely your ink nozzles have clogged up.
try several cleanings, if it still does not work, you probably have to get the printhead replaced.

Brother MFC-465CN won't prink cyan

You got to re-check back the Ink Cartridge you've buy recently.. Sometime the ink already freeze inside the cartridge bcoz its been really-really-really long time they keep before the usage.. Ive also have experience about problem like this b4, so better re-check/change back the cartridge.. Or If the
printer head is not at the cartridge, it is seperate from the cartridge, you have to check back the printer head also.. normally all the new printer head comes together with the cartridge.. and prefer to use the Original Cartridge more than Pirated Cartridge ok.. Cheap Cartridge always giv a lot of problem, especially like Your problem.. Thats All, Good Luck and Happy Trying..

Which cart arent recognized? The yellow one or the cyan(blue) one or both?

Anyway:
Unplug machine from power. Wait three minutes. In this time take all carts out and close cover. reconnect machine to power. Machine demands carts. Open cover. Reinsert carts. Make sure that the support clip of the cart.holder is secured above the cart cover.

If you still have probs with one cart. the led contact on the circuit board is defectiv. You need a new cart holder then, which can be ordered as a spare part from a service partner near your home (see brother homepage).
