Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly. Fuel starvation is cause by debris in the bottom of the float bowl most of the time. Removed the bowl nut and bowl. Take some carb cleaner and shoot into the hole that the bowl nut screws into. Also clean out the holes on the side of the bowl nut. The fixes about 85% of all fuel starvation problems.

Debris in the fuel tank exit port, a dirty fuel filter, or a clogged float needle seat area can also cause the problem. I think if you follow the instructions above you should be back in business. If not pass the exact model number of your engine and I will help you by providing diagrams and how to steps at that point. The engine number is located just behind the oil fill hole on the bottom side panel of the crank case base.

Thanks for choosing FixYa.

I have had the carb off and cleaned it all out. all the ports and vents are clear..It will run for about a min. then sputters and stops. you have to wait about a min. or so before it will start again and does the same thing over.. any Ideas?

What I would check if you brought it to me for repair.
    1. Fuel tank port,
    2. Fuel filter (replace)
    3. Fuel selector (some of these have a bowl on the bottom clean the bowl)
That should be tank to carb fuel lines. If you have good fuel supply.. i.e it wil fill a spray paint can lid in under 8 seconds... then I would suspect the fuel float needle was sticking closed above the float.

I have the exact same problem, starts 1 pull, runs perfect then dies. Put a brand new carb on, cleaned the tank, and new fuel. Same thing. Wait 15 seconds, runs perfect and dies.

It sounds like you have some debris or water in the carberator. You can drain the bowl easily depending on the style of carb. Most newer units take a 7/16 or 1/2 inch opened end wrench and just loosen the bowl bolt or valve whichever it might be until you get fuel or fluid flow. If there is water or other debris I recommend dumping the tank and flushing the fuel system with a good carb cleaner.

Hello, W/D here.
Check the pinhole vent in the fuel filler cap. As fuel is removed when the engine is running, air is pulled into the tank. If the vent is blocked, a vacuum is formed, and fuel cannot flow. After a period of down time, air infiltrates back into the tank, and the engine can be re-started. You can test this out just by cracking the cap open after starting the engine, just enough to allow air to get into the tank.

Usually, if the battery is dying, it won't start up again.
Usually, motorized vehicles only use the battery to start the engine, then the alternator contributes all the power for actual operation.
A dead alternator or battery shouldn't 'sputter', they would just stop dead.

If the engine will start, run and then sputter...there is a fuel problem.
1. There may be a 'cut-off' in the fuel line which is in the off postion. It may look like a thin, flat wing-nut.
2. The gas may be contaminated with water residue if the gasoline has been sitting a long time. I believe you can get some water treatment to fix this without having to dump the fuel tank contents.
3. The fuel line is blocked with dirt somewhere, I would check the fuel filter and work backwards from there.

My Poulan runs for a few minutes then idles down shuts off. Get it running again does same thing

Check the governor spring to see if it is streched out or the bracket it attaches to is bent, this can cause the problem. Also the carb may need cleaned and rebuilt,if it contains a diaphram gasket it could be bad causing it to die.

Normal maintenance been applied to this rider ? Filters, lube, cleanings ? This sounds like an electrical issue (component hot), or a vacuum in the fuel tank. Next time it 'stops' open the fuel tank up and listen to any air 'whooshing' in.

My mower will run for a bit then start dieing

Sounds like there may be trash in the carb. when the gas bowl is full it runs until the gas runs out then it dies. Take the breather off get it started and then put you hand over the intake on the carb. sometimes this will allow the trash to be sucked on through do this several times take your hand off before the motor shuts down and then do it again until you clear it up. If this does not fix the problem you can take the bowl off the carb an see if it is getting fuel with the float hanging down this opens up the needle valve to let gas fill the bowl. there should be a steady stream of gas coming out. when the bowl fills up the float floats up and closes the needle valve. If there is not a steady stream of fuel coming out with the float hanging down with the bowl off you may have to remove the float and needle valve and clean out the needle valve jet with something like a sewing needle. If you are getting gas steady and fire to the plug it should run.

When mower gets hot it cuts off crank back up run a min cut off

1 of 2 things happening
first change the fuel filter seams that the gas is vapourizing
If that does not fix it replace the engine coil as it heats up it is breaking down in voltage causing the engine to die
