SOURCE: Enclosure type

Sealed box and somewhat large if they are 12's I usually try to get 3 cubic feet overall internal dimensions and generally the inside dimensions will be 13" tall 32" wide and 13"-14" inches deep. with no divider and make sure the box is sealed. Personally I like to phase the speakers backwards. Gives the bass a little more rumble.

You should be able to download the owners manual for these speakers. The manufacturer will give detailed specs. on the type and dimensions of recommended enclosures for this particular speaker. If nothing is available to download, you could try to contact the manufacturer directly.

12 inch sub(JBL) in box with a 500 watt pioneer amp, sounds good with some types of base. would you cut a port hole in speaker box?

riverray1969 it would help if I knew the exact model number of that JBL sub you are referring to. With that info I can provide exact specs.

Basically, you need to build/modify an sub enclosure that is suited for the sub, the music you mainly play, and vehicle tuning. Generally, sealed enclosures will provide tighter bass response and get decently loud. Some would argue that it will give you greater sound quality. A ported enclosure will give you a louder more booming sound. That depends also on where the port is tuned (ex. 32 hz, 36 hz, etc ). You need to make sure that the enclosure meets the sub's airspace requirement as well. A customized well made enclosure is just as important as the sub you put in it.

Hi i have a 15"w3-d4 jl audio sub,can anyone tell me what size antype box i should use ie sealed or ported and the box dimensions

Hi,
I've had a look at the JLaudio website and they recommend 2 box designs, a ported and a sealed.
The sealed box needs a volume of:
2.125 ft3 or 60.2 litres.
To get this you would need to build the box to these dimensions:
22" x 16" x 14.75" or 559mm x 406mm x 375mm
The ported box needs a volume of:
3.50 ft3 or 99.1 litres.
To get this you would need to build the box to these dimensions:
24" x 19" x 18" or 610mm x 483mm x 457mm.
The port needs to be:
3.0" x 10.9" or 76mm x 277mm.
The enclosure recommendations listed above are external dimensions which assume the use of 3/4" (19mm) thick material. If you are using 5/8" (16mm) thick material, subtract 1/4" (6.5mm) from each dimension. Do not use any material with a thickness of less than 5/8" (16mm) as this may compromise the rigidity of the enclosure.
• All enclosure volumes listed above are net internal volumes! Driver displacement, port displacement and brace displacement must be added to obtain the final gross internal volume. All enclosure dimensions above have already taken this into acount.
• When using two subwoofers in a common enclosure simply double the required volume and, in the case of a ported enclosure, use two times the recommended port(s). Likewise, when using three subwoofers in a common enclosure simply triple the required volume and, in the case of a ported enclosure, use three times the recommended port(s).
• We recommend the use of this speaker in a bi-amplified system using high-quality satellite speakers and a high-quality amplifier. We do not recommend the use of this subwoofer with a passive crossover (coil), as this type of device will adversely affect performance.
As you can see it all depends on the space you have available, whilst the vented box will give you a more efficient bass responce especially with the low range frequencies.

If you to go and look at the information about your sub woofer and find out all the information about building or buying the correct enclosure then this is the link to the pdf file I found:
The enclosure info is on page 3:
JL AUDIO 15W3 Tech Specs and box info.
Warm regards
Mike

I need an enclosure for a power acoustik mofo 12''.

Hello miles_jamike,

Power Acoustik recommends a 1.25 CuFt sealed and 2.0 CuFt ported enclosure for the P1, P2 and P3 subs. The PSQ needs 1.25 sealed and 1.75 ported. In physical size, this translates into about 16X12X14 for sealed and about 30X42X15 ported.

You should try to stay pretty close to the recommended enclosure volume for best performance. A good volume calculator is located here on the12V.com website. Just enter the proposed width, height, depth, and material thickness and click the "=" to get the CuFt.

If you are building (or having built) a custom enclosure for a specific location in your vehicle, all you need to do is stay very close to the volume recommended.

If you intend to purchase a generic enclosure, the Goldwood shown here at Parts Express is an exact fit. Atrend also makes good generic enclosures, their model 12SAL in a sealed box with 1.20 CuFt and the 12LSV ported with 2.50 CuFt would be good choices.

Crutchfield has both generic and custom enclosures made by JL, MTX, QLogic, and Bass Slammer. Crutchfield has excellent support. They will respond promptly and positively to your phone or email inquires. If you have never ordered from them, you can use a "friend referral code", such as mine, which is: p7sdj-hrx8q-9800g, and on any order of $200 or more, you receive a $20 discount. And I get a $20 credit on a future order. Also, many orders qualify for free shipping.

Hope this helps.

The best bass in this case

HERE is the owners manual for your sub.

If looking for LOUD, ported enclosure is the way to go.

If looking for accuracy, build sealed.

You dont have enough depth for an isobaric setup.

using the maximum dimensions given, 8x13x41, the volume of the biggest enclosure you could make (assuming 3/4" MDF material) is 1.7cu ft.

To tune this 1.7cuft box around 50Hz, you need (1) 4" round port 5" long.

MTX recommends an enclosure of 2cuFt ea. You will only be able to use 1 subwoofer in this application.

Even a sealed enclosure is recommended 1.25cuFt.

You can shove 2 in the vented enclosure, but you may not be happy with the outcome.

Thanks for using FixYa - A Fixya Rating is appreciated!!
