Unplug tool first and then remove the 3 screws on the side cover to expose the pulleys, while apart clean the entire area with compressed air. start the belt on the smaller pulley and then ROLL it onto the larger one and after it is installed roll it a few more times to make fully seated. reinstall the cover and screws and you are ready to go. they made 2 different belt types for this tool so make sure that you get the correct one. the older one has ridges that go the entire area of the belt and the newer one has cogs spaced out.

I need to replace a drive belt on a porter cable belt sander model 371 and am having difficulty putting the new one on.

I believe you push the front roller until it clicks, then slide old belt off. Then push to release lock

How do I adjust the porter cable sander so that the belt runs stright?

The porter cable belt sanders have an adjustment knob (threaded screw with a black plastic t-nut on the end). The knob adjusts the angle of one of the rollers and thus the tracking of the belt. The know takes very little adjustment to change the belt's tracking.

Is the know perhaps missing? You can get replacement parts for for porter cable tools at www.servicenet.com.

Hope this helps.

I have a Porter Cable Model 371 2.5" X 14" Belt Sander. I broke a belt, when I did it jammed and also broke a rubber sleeve that covers the Drive Wheel. I have yet to find this rubber sleeve in any part...

Unfortunatly that sleeve is not available, you will need to purchase a whole new drive wheel. The Drive wheel is $9.66 from DeWalt Service Net. Porter Cable, Delta & DeWalt are all owned by Stanley Black & Decker, you can contact DeWalt Factory Service for all parts. 1-800-4-DeWalt You can order the parts on-line, over the phone or though a local service center. The website is www.dewaltservicenet.com Below is the parts diagram for your sander. The part number for the drive wheel is A16439

Replacing sand paper

Look on the side of the tool between the guide and drive wheels for a lever

Loosening or disengaging this lever will take the tension off of the belt so that it can be removed

If there is no lever, there will be a tension know on the front of the tool that you can loosen to remove the belt

How do you replace the drive belt on a Porter Cable Belt Sander

There is a lever on the side at the front right near the roller that you can use to release the spring tension on that roller (moving it slightly to the rear).  Once the tension is released you can slip the sanding belt onto both rollers from the side.  Release the lever and the spring will put tension on the belt to hold it in place.  Use the knob on the left side to center the belt on the roller if it starts to slip sideways when in use.
