Try looking for a manual for your machine here.
http://www.riccar.com/help/manuals/
If your model number isn't listed try looking for a similar model or the number nearest to your machine.
Usually, sewing machines of the same brand thread in the same way. Hope this helps!

Here's a manual for the Riccar R651, if that's similar to your machine the 939FA, it might be useful. http://www.riccar.com/ftp/whitepapers/R6...

Thread keeps tangling on underside

Called thread nesting or bird nesting.

Install a brand new needle that is compatible with the thread and fabric you are using.
Remove the top thread totally from the machine.
ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and rethread the top thread from the beginning.
Confirm the thread path is correct.
Retest your machine.

Nesting thread on bottom of fabric

This is called bird nesting or thread nesting. It occurs most often because the thread is not seated completely in the tension disk.

Remove the top thread from the machine.
ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and rethread from the beginning.
Verify the thread path is correct.
It also may help to use a brand new needle.

Thread bunching up on bottom of fabric

Remove the top thread from your machine (NOTE: ALWAYS clip the thread next to the spool, lift the presser foot, and gently pull the top thread down from top to bottom!!! This helps reduce the chances of breaking something by pulling the thread upwards!)

ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and rethread the top thread from beginning. Verify the thread path is correct and start out with the thread tension set at the midway point (and then tweak the top thread tension through testing).

FWIW, if the thread problem appears under the fabric, it is generally a top thread issue. If the thread problem appears on the top of the fabric, it is generally a bobbin thread issue.

Hi I am having problem with my sewing machine. Thread gets all tangled up on the bottom of the fabric... My husband is very smart about machine and needs just suggestions from you.

That is called bird nesting or thread nesting and usually results from: mis-threading, thread not seated fully in the upper tension disk, or upper tension too loose. (Mis-threading may not be a user error--sometimes the thread will "jump" out of thread guide or the take-up lever.)

Remove the thread from the machine. ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot and rethread from the beginning. Verify the thread path is correct. Set the upper tension at the midway point between high & low number and retest your machine. The upper tension will probably need some tweaking for your particular machine, but the mid-point is a good place to start.

The thread keeps breaking .

You may have the tension set too tight or are not using the correct needle. Or, the bobbin thread may not be the same as the top thread. If the tensions are o.k., try using a ballpoint needle.

the name & model number of the sewing machine is not shown
when a sewing machine sits up for a long time, sometimes the oil & grease can become break down & it does not take care of the machine like it should, & they need to be serviced once a year
the needle should be changed & the correct needle for the thread & fabric
it should be cleaned under the needle plate & in the bobbin area for loose threads & lint
the tension needs to be checked

Birds nests under fabric and thread breaking.

My manual says the needle thread tension is too loose , OR the needle is to fine/heavy for the thread being used.

Hopefully you have a new needle in the right way and not a dull bent one. And are putting your bobbin in correctly so that when looking at the back of the bobbicase and when pulling the thread it turns clockwise. Counter-clockwise things like this will happen. Also that the foot is up when threading ensuring that the thread goes between the tension disks. Serious jam ups can also cause it to get out of timing which you may need a tech for.

Top tread bird nesting.

When you say top thread nesting, I supose you mean that the thread is messed up at the top of the needle plate.
If so,
1st, either your bobbin thread is completely loose, or the bobbin thread is not held under the bobbin case spring,
or lint has been accumulated under the bobbin case spring.
2nd, the top thread is very tight,

or both.
