Question about M-Audio M Audio Keystation 88es 88 Key USB Midi Controller

1 Answer

The keyboard is plugged in, the software (keystation and Live discs) are on my computer, and I have gone through the tutorials. I see that MIDI information is being sent to the computer from the keyboard - when I press a key the Live screen reacts - but no sound is emitted.

No sound is emitted from either.

If you could confirm, that would maybe answer my question. But, the keyboard itself has made no sound. The User Guide states, "Once you have finished installation you will need to configure your MIDI application software to use your Keystation keyboard. Please note that when you press a key on the keyboard, you will not hear any sound. This is because pressing a key causes the keyboard to send out MIDI data. MIDI data gives instructions on how a sound should play, but in order to actually hear that sound you need to configure your music software to read the MIDI data being sent from your Keystation and play the sound back accordingly... Please consult the manual that came with your software for the proper set up procedure." To me, this means that I have to initialize my setup with the software before sound is made. I worked with the software, consulted the manual, and still no sound.

When you say no sound is emitted, do you mean from the computer speakers or from the keyboard itself? I can definitely help you just need some more info.

Thanks
Tim

That is very strange, when you disconnect it from the computer the keyboard works / makes noise normally correct? Are you certain this program is supposed to emit sound, and that it is not just for recording the midi? I will confirm if you are unsure.

I see, it sounds like it is in fact working like it's supposed to be. The keystation software does no actually play back for sound as far as I can tell. You will need to play it with some other media player designed to output midi music. Windows media player should do it just fine. If you want, you can email me one of the midi files you have created and I will test it out and see if it does actually contain data you can playback for sound. You can send it over to microtechftp@yahoo.com

    Thanks so much

I just bought an M-Audio Keystation 88ES. I have a used Behringer expression pedal. The pedal works fine in the sustain input, but when I insert the jack in the volume input it cuts all power to the...

If the power goes off when you plug in the pedal, the pedal LIKELY has a short in it between two of the three connections at the plug.

Firat, try putting the pedal plug in BEFORE applying power.

Likely the pedal presents a pot or volume control that will have like 5 volts across it an the wiper returned on the same cable. If the wiring configuration is wrong OR if the plug goes through a period of shorting the 5 volts out during insertion that will cause a problem...

To troubleshoot, move the pedal to half way and these with an ohmmeter for shorts between ANY two of the three connections.

You haven't said what kind of computer you have but I will recommend a program called Audacity which is very good. It is freeware. You will need a stereo cable with plugs that match the line out jacks on your keyboard on one end and an 1/8" stereo plug on the other. The 1/8" should go into the line in jack on your computers sound card. Audacity is available here:http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ That is to get you started. If you want notation software, I would recommend Finale which you will have to purchase for a full version. Their website is here:http://www.finalemusic.com/ They have trial versions available. Here is a link to another program that might be good although I haven't tried the program:http://www.techspot.com/downloads/1831-magicscore-school.html If you want to use a program to record the midi output of your keyboard, you will have to use a midi cable from the midi out on your keyboard to a midi to usb adapter to your computer. That is the easiest way if your sound card has no midi in/ out jacks. Here is a good link to info about all that:http://www.indiana.edu/~emusic/etext/MIDI/chapter3_MIDI.shtml Let me know if this helps.

Yamaha 61 key keyboard midi usb connected but what next

Depending on what you want to do...

If it's only music Mixing, you will have to plug your keyboard via audio jack to the line in of your computer. Then Audacity (free soft) can do the job.

If you want to edit midi file with your keybord you will need midi editor software like Linux-Rosegarden or if under windows try LMMS (all free soft of course).

Good luck
