When you are watering, use the bypass valve on the back of your water-softener.
An in-line check valve could be installed on the cold water inlet of the water heater. However, if you install a check valve you will also need to install a small pressure tank or pressure relief valve between the water heater and check valve to balance the pressure in the system.

Repair a cold water leak at the bottom of my water heater

Hi -

If your water heater is working (ie: making hot water) then most likely your heater isn't leaking. Rather, the leak is coming from the cold water supply and running down the tank where you see it at the bottom of the tank. A working tank that is leaking would produce a leak of hot water - not cold. You should carefully check the cold water piping for a leak, drip or stream of water and make the required repairs.

Tankless water heater doesn't produce hot water in the winter when tempetures are below 32 degrees. I tried a water saver shower head and this worked for a little while. Anything else I can do ?

1) Tempering tank might help:

2) Reduce temperature setting on tankless unit so there is less differential between incoming cold water and thermostat set point.

3) Absolutely any tankless problem can be solved same day by installing tank-type gas water heater:

4) Add comment and say what you do to solve problem.

Question posted under Bosch tankless.
Question says 'tank'
Brand, model, and type heater unknown.
Elements mean electric.
'Thermal cutout pops when taking shower produces cold water' indicates tankless, since tank-type would maintain some hot water.
No error code might indicate tank-type.
Add a comment with type, brand and model number of heater for possible assistance.

Takes a long time to get cold water. Then it is still luke warm. New house. Unhook it, and you get plenty of cold water. Takes forever to get hot.

Open water heater drain valve or TP valve to see if unit is producing hot water.
Protect yourself from scalding water.

If water heater is not working, then call service technician, or re-post question on fixya with type of water heater, description of water heater and brand, and what you have done so far to repair problem.

If water heater is working, then you probably have crossover problem at recirculation system check-valve or at single-handle faucet. Or both.
Remove check valve and clean with white vinegar; replace defective single-handle faucet cartridge.

After water to house was shut off, my Noritz tankless water heater is on but won't produce hot water. On the unit, the light indicating that the burner is on stays off now.

you probably had debris get into the filter or flow sensor when the water was turned back on. I'd recommend checking the filter first and if that doesn't work, call Noritz Tech support to help you with the flow sensor.

the filter is a black plug located on the cold water line (labeled cold on the bottom of the unit). It points torwards the left.

I am getting alternate C7 and 76 code as unit powers on and off , alternately giving hot and cold water

called Rheem and after giving them the info they are shipping out a replacement board which I can install, hopefully overcome the hot water problem for the short term I disconnected the remote wires at the heater which lets the heater keep producing hot water albeit without the remote...I will keep the old board as backup in case this happens again as there seems to be problems with the PCB

Its A Possibility The Left Over Water In The Hot Is Frozen. If Your Line Is Exposed Outside Somewhere It Can Easily Freeze Up. Turn On The Hot Water Everywhere In The House And If Accessible Check The Lines To See Where The Warmth Ends. You Can Leave One Off Over Night In Hopes That It Will Eventually Defrost.
