Question about Whirlpool Duet GHW9150P Front Load Washer

Open Question

My washer smells like dirty socks - AFTER I complete the wash cycle. It is difficult to smell any detergent or softener at all. Any idea what this could be? This problem began a few weeks ago.

SOURCE: stinky laundry

Hi! I have Kenmore Elite 4t and had this same problem: Musty, Moldy smell in washer and on clothes. The Sears Technician suggested that I use a half a cup of Clorox Liquid Bleach and put it in the tub (not the dispenser). NO CLOTHES! Use the longest hottest setting and when it's done clean the inside (underneath rubber tire thingie) and the undernath part of the door with a papertowel. And to always leave the door open. I did what he said with the bleach and it worked. I didn't want to leave the door open because I have 2 cats & was afraid that they would want to go in it, but ended up repeating the bleach thing again because a few days later the horrible smell was back. I leave the door open all the time now and the cats never go in it. They've watched laundry spin around, so I guess they're smart enough to not want to go in it. I have not had this problem again since I always leave the door open and I did this over a month ago. I hope this helps!

SOURCE: Mold & Smelly in Washer

Shepherd, Finkelman, Miller & Shah, LLC, is currently investigating defects and other problems in certain front-loading washing machines manufactured and/or sold by Whirlpool, Kenmore, and LG Electronics, including Kenmore Elite HE3 front load washers, Whirlpool Duet front load washers and LG Tromm, LG XL and other LG model front load washers, which result in the growth of mold/mildew in the machines and which can cause the staining of clothes and other problems.

On August 29, 2007, SFMS filed a Complaint against Sears Holding Corp. involving its Kenmore HE, HE2, HE3, HE4, HE5 and other front-loading automatic washers. If you own a front-loading washing machine that is manufactured by any of the above-mentioned companies and are experiencing the growth of mold/mildew in the machine, visit the following website: www.frontloadwasherclassaction.com

SOURCE: Mold & Smelly in Washer

Thanks for your suggestion about looking in the lip of the seal. I found one of my three year old granddaughters socks. Also, the seal for very dirty so I mixed a 50% solution and 50% solution of chlorox and used an old towel rag to wipe and wash throughly around the lip seal.

I noted that the aluminum ring inside the washer had also accumulated a lot of dirt. With one hand and fingers I held the wet cholorx towel inside the ring and with the other hand spun the tub around several turns until I had removed all the dirt and grime.

It did have a moldy smell. I'll let you know if this fixed the problem.

My suggestion is to contact Maytag. I have the same problem. Maytag can tell you what you can do to reduce the odor. I think the problem originates from the fact that the drum always has water in it and the rubber seal has a bad smell.

SOURCE: Our Clothes smell musty and the washer smells too

I checked the whirlpool web site and typed in "musty washer" for a search of the site. They gave directions on how to run a cleaning cycle on the machine (whether your washer has a special button for it or not) This REALLY helped my machine. They also had trouble shooting tips for keeping the musty smell away.

How to Remove Mold and Mildew from Front-Load Washing Machines

moldy-smell-washing-machine-1.jpg Front-load washing machines are notorious for collecting mold.
I've had my front-loading washing machine for about four years, and it has some great advantages - it's quiet, fast, uses less water and detergent, and gently tumbles (rather than yanking) my clothes. In general, I've been so pleased with it that I was shocked one day when I opened the door and was nearly knocked unconscious by a fetid blast of moldy-smelling air!
How could a machine that's so wonderful, suddenly turn so horribly smelly?
moldy-smell-washing-machine-2.jpg
Gaskets hold moisture.
The answer is in the way the machine is designed. Front-loading washing machines have watertight, airtight doors that seal with a rubber gasket. That rubber seal traps moisture in the machine and also provides the perfect nooks and crannies for mold and mildew to grow.
Top-loading washing machines, on the other hand, have a rather loose fitting metal door that easily allows the tank to dry out between loads.
The problem isn't helped by our laundry preferences. High sudsing detergents and liquid fabric softeners leave behind residues and films that invite mold growth. Cold-water cycles and mild, eco-friendly detergents don't quite blast away residues like their environmentally-unfriendly counterparts.
So, to keep mold at bay, front-load washers need just a bit more maintenance than top-loading machines.

How to Get Rid of Mold and Smells in Top-Load Washers

If you've got a stinky front-load washing machine, here's how to get it smelling fresh again:
    moldy-smell-washing-machine-3.jpg Cleaning gasket on washer.
  • Clean Gasket: Use a rag or towel to clean the rubber door gasket on a front-loading washer with either hot soapy water or a spritz of mildew cleaner. Make sure to wipe underneath and around it as well. Be prepared for some slime and gunk, and possibly a stray sock or two!
  • Clean Dispensers: Remove the detergent dispensers and give them a good scrubbing. If they don't come out, clean them as best you can, using a bottle or pipe cleaner to reach back into the crevices.
  • Run Cleaning Cycle: Next, run an empty wash cycle on the longest, hottest water setting (or a tub-cleaning cycle, if you have it). Add one of the following directly to the wash tub:
    • 1 cup of bleach.
    • 1 cup of baking soda.
    • 1/2 cup of powdered enzymatic dishwasher detergent (such asCascade Complete).
    • A commercial residue-busting washer cleaner (such as Affresh orSmelly Washer).
    moldy-smell-washing-machine-4.jpg Commercial cleaning pellets.
  • Repeat Cleaning Cycle: If the problem persists, repeat the cleaning cycle and consider trying a different additive. It might take several cycles to get the smell out.
  • Professional Help: If you've tried every way to clean your front-load washer and it still smells, you may have mold growing back behind the drum, or possibly a clogged drain or filter. A qualified repair person can dismantle the machine and clean it for you, or you can unplug the machine and carefully explore and clean it yourself.

Preventative Maintenance

Once your machine is clean, follow these tips to keep it that way:
moldy-smell-washing-machine-5.jpg Allow washer tub to dry.
  • Air It Out: If possible, leave the door of the front-load washer cracked open to allow it to dry thoroughly between cycles. However, you shouldn't do this if you have children or pets who could be tempted to climb (and possibly become trapped) inside the machine.
  • Remove Loads Promptly: Be sure to remove wet clothes as soon as the cycle is finished. Set your washer to beep when it's done, so you don't forget.
  • Choose Detergent Wisely: Choose low-sudsing detergents specifically made for high-efficiency (HE) machines. When possible, choose powder over liquid; liquid detergents are usually higher in suds.
  • moldy-smell-washing-machine-6.jpg Clean washer dispensers.
  • Use Less Detergent: Read the labels and use no more than the amount recommended for each load. Experiment with using less detergent, until you find the minimum amount necessary (sometimes just a spoonful) to get your clothes clean.
  • Avoid Fabric Softener: Liquid fabric softeners leave residue that contributes to mold in front-load washers. Instead, use dryer sheets or dryer balls to soften your clothes.
  • Dry Gaskets: Use an old towel to wipe around and underneath the door gaskets and the inside of the door on front-loading washers. Ideally, you should so this after every cycle, but at the very least it needs a periodic wipe down to remove any water or mildew trapped in the folds.
  • Use Bleach: About once a month, run a hot water bleach cycle. I usually take the opportunity to throw in work towels, fabric shower curtains, and muddy gardening clothes, along with that nasty gasket-cleaning towel.

Top load washer smells like rotten eggs when water is draining into tub

As someone who has had a deep well drilled and found water, but water contaminated with iron and sulfur, I can tell you first hand about the rotten egg smell. The water softener will remove the iron that can turn clothes orange, but doesn't do anything to remove the rotten egg odor. You will need a charcoal (carbon) water filter to eliminate the sulfur smell.

I have a whirlpool cabrio washing machine.ecerything is working fine but its beginning to smell like sewer. The sink next to it doesn't smell nor the drains. It's coming from the washer. Anything I ca

Clear your filter.
Remove detergent drawer and clean the drawer and its receptacle on the machice.
Bung in 8 milton tablets in the drum and put it on the hottest longest wash you can and leave it run normally.

Run a short cold wash to flush the machine

Now put some nice smelling low foaming disinfectant in and repeat the hot wash cycle.
This should sort it but may take repeated treatments. Lower the amount of softener and detergent you use as excess can build up and can cause this problem to come back. Additionally dont overload with really dirty cloths and if you do a wash with exceptionally dirty cloths then after you empty your machine put it on a shortest rinse cycle to purge and contaminated water that is left behind.

If all this fails you will need to have your machine serviced.

How to get rid moldy smell in LG Front loader washmachine?

There are several cleaners for front loading washers on the market, such as affresh, washer magic, smellywasher cleaner, whirlaway hot tub cleaner, and tide washer cleaner. Clean out the filter located behind the access door at the lower left front of the machine, then, if your model has a tub clean setting, use that with one of those cleaners, if not, use one of those cleaners with the longest, hottest cycle. If things were very bad, you may have to clean it twice. Now, after it is cleaned out,.....STOP USING SO MUCH SOAP ! Use only one tablespoon of HE laudry detergent per cycle, and only one teaspoon of fabric softener if you use that. (Note: Bath towels, used only to wipe off clean bodies, then tossed into the laundry are not dirty enough to require soap usage, and should never have softener used on them) The odors in your washer are caused by a build up of soap and fabric softeners on the inside of the washer's drum. Also, you may have a build up of soap or fabric softener on your clothes. Wash them again once with no soap or fab softener to rinse them out.

Washer smells bad

Whirlpool and Tide make a cleaner that you put into the washer and run it through a cycle. Front loaders get a build-up that cannot be cleaned by hand. Make sure you are using a detergent that is marked "HE". Do not overfill the detergent or softener cups. I've heard that other used a lot of bleach in a wash cycle to clear out the smell. Bleach is bad to use if you're on a septic system, though.

Sweaty gym-sock smell from washer

Hello barbaracrowl,
From your description, it sounds like the drain system is running back into your washer and you are getting dirty water back into it which in turn causes a build up of mold etc.. I would evaluate the drain system first to make sure you have a water trap and no restrictions that would cause backflow. I would also cycle it on the hottest setting and use a cup or two of white vinegar in lieu of detergent. You may also consider wiping down all surfaces that have that gunk buildup with white vinegar too. When complete.. try cycling an empty washer and open it to periodically examine the water itself for any residue or scum.. To eliminate any backflow after all these cycles are run, you could drain it into a nearby sink or shower stall or rubber barrel just to make sure you aren't getting any backstreaming dirty water. Let me know how it works out or what you find and if my suggestions don't help.. I have a few other ideas that may help you.. BTW: use the lowest wash load setting for all tests and the hottest..
Regards and Good Luck,
Rick

Smell coming from washing machine

IMPORTANT: Read thoroughly. DO NOT add detergent or other laundry products to this cycle.
1. Remove all items from the washer.
2. Open the dispenser drawer and 2/3 cup (160 mL) of liquid chlorine bleach to the bleach compartment. DO NOT use more than 2/3 cup (160mL) of bleach per cycle as this will lead to product damage.
3. Close the washer door and dispenser drawer.
4. Select the Clean Washer cycle or a full wash cotton 104 F wash (40 C). DO NOT use any higher temperature as this will cause unnecessary fumes
5. Press Start and allow cycle to complete.
6. If the bad odour persists, repeat the procedure 1 or 2 more times. This may be necessary if this is the first time you have run this cycle.
7. After the cycle is complete, leave the door open slightly to allow ventilation and drying of the washer interior.
8. Repeat the cleaning procedure monthly.
To maintain the washer freshness:
1. Use only HE High Efficiency detergent.
2. Leave the door open after each cycle to for better ventilation and drying of the washer interior.
3. Use warm / hot water in your machine unless the fabric you are washing requires cold.
4. Use the correct amount of fabric softener.
5. If your laundry room is damp, use a dehumidifier.
6. Clean the door seal of visible residue.
