Question about Hitachi 120GB Hi-Speed Mobile Disk USB 2.0 External (EXTMD120) Hard Drive

1 Answer

I have a Hitachi Simple Drive Mini x 320 GB that I've been using as an external for my macbook pro. I have been using it without problems for over a month now, but last week it didn't eject properly from my laptop and now whenever I try and connect the external it says that it is drawing too much power from the USB port and the computer will not recognize it. The port itself is fine and this issue has never come up before. I have tried everything I can think of on the apple side of the issue and I am beginning to worry that the external may just be fried. Is there anything I can do that I am overlooking, perhaps changing to a firewire connection or something so that I can still use it?

Does the usb cable you are using have 2 usb plugs so you can plug it into 2 usb ports at the same time.
If not, you could try using one, sometimes my external HD will not work on some pc's if i just plug it into 1 port

Hitachi Simple Drive mini 500 GB USB only ticking sound when plugged in. Eight months old, used sparingly. Any ideas?

The external storage device has several major components:

* USB cable

* external power-supply (your "mini" device may not need one)

* disk-drive inside the enclosure

* USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

Try a different USB cable.
Try a different USB port on your computer.
Try a USB port on a different computer.

Take a multi-meter, and measure the output voltage/amperage of the power-supply,
and compare with the specifications on the label of the power-supply.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and attach it as a "slave" drive in a desktop computer, to see if bypassing the USB-to-disk-drive adapter bypasses the problem.

Look at the label on the disk-drive, for manufacturer, product-number, serial-number, and manufacture date. Access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status" to see if the warranty still is valid. If so, the drive can be replaced, at minimal cost to you.

Buy a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Search online for a professional "data recovery service". For a significant fee, they can repair your disk-drive, just long-enough to copy your files to a new disk-drive.

My hitachi 320GB external hard drive is not mounting on my macbook (mac os x 10.5) and is not even found in disk utility.

When this happens, usually the drive is a total loss. You can check this by connecting to a USB to hard drive dongle, and connect to a windows PC, IF it works here you may simply need to reformat back on the Apple. If it doesn't then the drive is bad.

Hard Drive not mounting

Check the jumper on each hard-drive.

My guess is that the WD drive has the jumper in the "correct" position, for mounting inside an external case, while the other drives have their jumper set to an "incorrect" position.

Set the jumper to MA(ster), not to SL(ave), nor to C(able)S(elect).
