Question about Rancilio Silvia Espresso Machine

1 Answer

I have a (nearly) 3 year old Silvia. I have made approx. 10 espresso drinks per week during that period - with no problem. All of a sudden, with group head loaded with a normal amount of Starbucks espresso (pre) ground coffee, I get barely a trickle of espresso. Without coffee in grouphead, it runs fine.......but then I never tried it without coffee in the grouphead until I had this problem. I used "dip it" 4 times - thinking scale buildup was problem. I cleaned the dispersion screen (soaked in dip-it over night & brushed) and ran 4 or 5 cups of water through the empty (no coffee) group head. Nothing works. Any pearls of wisdom?

Your 3 way valve is stuck. Its the panel behind the brew head. Slides to the right only.

Sorry I didn't read it all. you could also have a bad pump or a overpressure valve the is releasing water back into the water tank. Check the return hose for the later.

Why won't my portafilter stay engaged once the water starts dripping? It flies off and sprays coffee grounds, and this started last week. Stays in place only if I wrestle with the filter handle.

It is possible that the grind you are using is too fine and causing so much back pressure that the portafilter is moving, also possible that the group gasket installed need to be replaced, I have also seen this happen with damaged screens.

Try to redo what you have been doing, but set it to the extremes to see if everything is functioning. If you set the grind say to 4, it should come out very slow or maybe not at all.

First of all, your machine is not safe to use so do not use it. A thermostat maybe have shorted out, a wire may have grounded, who knows. Pull the top off and determine where and what has burned out. It should be quite visible.

Have you ever changed the brwe head gasket? It should be changed yearly at least. They get hard from the heat and won't seal. They should be soft to make a good seal. You can change it your self. I have left post on changing gaskets. Look for Silvia solutions.

I have my Silvia for 3 years and for the last couple week, it gives me espresso watery with no crema. I havent changed anything for the last 3 years. Please help!

It definitely needs preventive maintenance once a year. There could be a couple of issues causing watery espresso. You could have a clogged shower screen or cracked porta-filter basket. They bypass valve from the pump could be leaking causing low pressure (check this by pulling a shot and seeing if water continually flows back into the tank via one of the water hoses).

Silvia leaking water

Hi
The solenoid valve needs back flushing the correct way with a espresso machine detergent like Cafiza, or Joe Glo. Place a 1/2 teaspoon in a blind basket. (don't come with Silvia). Place blind basket in portafilter and brew like making espresso, but run pump for no more than 5 to 10 seconds or until the pump starts to change tone (slow down). Stop the pump when either of these things happen or Silvia can be damaged. Repeat the pump 5 to 10 times leaving a 1 minute wait between cycles, or the suds comming out the 3 way valve turns pure white, with no coffee stains in the foam. Remove the portafilter and rinse then reinsert and repeat the cycles to rinse the internals. This should take care of the problem. If not you may have to replace the 3 way.

You are correct. There might be something keeping the solenoid from closing. Yes you husband should be able to fix it. Have him clean out the solenoid.

Hi Sounds like you have a stuck 3 way valve. Its behind the panel in the front. The panel slides to the right when the screw are out.
