Question about Ace Hardware InSinkErator Badger 5, 1/2 HP Garbage Disposal

1 Answer

I have a Badger 5 1/2 HP garbage disposal. When I turn on the power switch it just makes a humming sound but doesn't engage. Is there a reset button somewhere on the unit that might need a reset? Thanks!

There should be a reset button (circuit breaker) on the bottom of the unit. It sounds more like the blades are stuck. Pull the plug on the unit and use an allen wrench on the manual blade turner on the bottom of the unit. If the blades are stuck, you will have to try and loosen them with the allen wrench. If you do get them loose, the question then is what was holding them. Could be debris in the ISE or something broken like a blade. Keep the unit unplugged when working on it.

The blades on my disposal weren't stuck but rather making a clickety sound when I would run it, kind of like a spoon was in it but I couldn't find any foreign (or familiar!) object in it. I used the allen wrench on the bottom of the unit and turned the blades manually, which sounded like two pieces of sand paper rubbing together. I poured some Pine Sol into it, thinking that the oily substance would help the blades turn more smoothly (I also used some shampoo since it's thicker and was conveniently under the sink). I continuously searched for whatever might be in the disposal and would turn it on for an instant to see if it would work without the rattling noise. I continued turning the allen wrench at the bottom of the disposal (clockwise and counterclockwise) until it magically turned without the sandpaper noise. Then, I turned on the disposal and it worked. Who said a woman can't get the job done! Thank you for the convenient, online help, FixYa.

HEY!!! Nice job there. One thing I did not mention in this solution is the fact that the ISE needs to hang straight down from the sink. When an ISE is installed, the basket is set on the sink and the ISE hangs from it. If the drain line(s) to the ISE cause it to be pulled a bit off center when they are later installed, it is very likely the blades will bind on the basket which could cause the clicking sound you referred to.
BTW, did you count your silverware? :)

Sounds like disposal motor has overheated and shorted.
Fortunately today's disposals are fully contained, and did not cause fire.
Replace disposal.

Garbage dispoal not working. The blades spin freely inside, the reset button has been reset, when you switch it on the moter makes a faint humming sound, and the allen wrench will not rotate either way.

You need a new disposal.
Free-rotating blades show there is no obstruction.
Humming says you have power.
Frozen allen wrench says bearings are rusted.
Motor is now overheating each timer electricity is turned on, and motor will overheat and stop humming.
At least the drain is clean and water is not flooding under the sink, which means you can continue using sink until disposal is replaced.

I get power through the reset button. No humming, no nothing. Is it a bad motor?

If i understand correctly, you tested the wires where they connect to the garbage disposal.
Those wires connect before the garbage disposal reset button.
If the reset button is locked in, then the reset is not popped out.
If reset will not reset, then the popped-out reset will push in but not click down.

If the reset is clicked in, and you hve 120V on the line, and the garbage disposal doesn't make any noise, then the motor is bad.
There are no replacement parts for garbage disposal.

Garbage disposle makes a humming noise when turned on. InSinkErator Badger 5, 1/2 HP Garbage Disposal

Did you also hear any clattering sounds when it started? If so, it is rotating. If not then this hum is the motor in the lock rotor stage. Did you place garbage in it yet? Always run cool water in it when starting it.

If the blades move freely with the wrench and stick and motor hums then it sounds like it is time to replace the unit. Have you tried the reset switch? If it is humming than it is probably not tripped but worth a try. Hope this helps.

BADGER GARBAGE DISPOSAL NO POWER

Have you checked the circuit breaker on the disposal itself? In the bottom there's a little button that resets the circuit breaker. press it in and see if that works. If the disposal is still jammed you should hear a hum.
