Question about Sony VAIO PCG-K27 Notebook

3 Answers

I need to retrieve data from the hard drive of my Sony VAIO PCG-K27 (the computer won't start anymore- it boots past the VAIO screen, then freezes on a blue screen error message. Also, I no longer have the Windows installation disks). If I can't get onto the computer, I need to save it's content some other way. I have a USB 2.0 to IDE and SATA cable, but of course it's not so easy to access the hard drive on a laptop. Can you please advise me what I should do? (either how to access the physical hard drive, or another solution) Thanks!

That page has a lot of info on the machine. If you have the proper cable to connect that hard drive to another computer, you should be able to see the contents and recover data. When you connect the drive it should show up in the add hardware window. If it does not you have to go to the control panel and check the computer administration icon and then storage and see if it is listed and initialize. The drive may have totally failed though.

2 problems
with a dead hard drive , retrieval of data is in the domain of experts who are set up to remove the disc and insert it in another unit --very costly and not cost effective unless you have business data to retrieve
working on a laptop is easy if you download the workshop manual for the lap top on another pc and print it out
best if you take it to an accredited computer repair shop and have them fit a new sshd unit to the laptop
--faster with no moving parts to fail and will not be affected by rough use
they may also have a name of the shop that does data retrieval

Well take the back cover off the laptop itself and retrieve the hard drive- then simply connect that to another computer and take files from there on to a external hard drive :)

It isnt hard just undo the screws in the back and take the battery out an give the cover a bit of a jiggle! You may need a small flat screwdriver just to pry the covers apart - Hard drive is very easily accessible from there :)

SOURCE: Where is the best place to get a new hard drive

You're on the right track--it doesn't need to be custom-manufactured for Sony notebooks--just needs to be an internal mobile IDE-PATA hard drive. Still, I would recommend at least looking for something name brand with a decent warranty. Amazon and Newegg.com both have the Western Digital WD2500BEVE (250GB) for $79.99. That's a decent price (not mind-boggling), but more importantly it's a solid size/price reference point--e.g., if you find a 500GB name-brand hard drive for the same price, pull the trigger immediately.

My sony vaio desk top pcg-11211L screen shows operating system not found

First - re-seat the hard disk and reboot the computer. If the computer does not boot up then reboot and go into the BIOS configuration to see if the BIOS detects the hard drive. If it doesn't detect the hard drive then it could be faulty.
Then the hard drive needs to be replaced in the computer/laptop, Windows installed and the computer or laptop's device drivers plus your programs etc. to get a functioning computer/laptop again.

Format hard dirve

you would either format or delete all of the data from this drive if it has an operating system on it you would format it

you have to format your hard drive using a third party disc to erase everything on your hard drive

During the boot process you will see on the screen to press a certain key to enter setup
Press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS the scroll to advanced bios features press enter change your first boot device to cd,press escape then press f10 to save to cmos restart

note this will erase you operating system you will have to have an operating system disk to load it onto you hard drive or create a partition to load another operating system
note after you have loaded the operating system you should go back and change the first boot device to failsafe or optimised defaults

after windows has loaded
your computer will automatically restart it might restart 2 times one to finish the installation
the next will be because the operating system is loaded and will boot from your cd
during the boot process you will see on the screen to press a certain key to enter setup
Press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS using the arrow keys load failsafe defaults or load optimized defaults press escape then press f10 to save to cmos to restart

The BIOS is AMI. Under ADVANCED SETUP:
The options listed for 1st,2nd ,3rd Boot device include:
IDE0 means Pri master
IDE1 means Pri slave
IDE2 means Sec master
IDE3 means Sec slave

or if you are using a USB

insert your usb drive

click start right click on my computer select open you should see your USB drive
right click then select format
another way is to control panel administrive tools, computer management disk management right click on your drive select format

hope this helps you

Hello. I have Sony Vaio PCG-5426. And I can't reinstall windows on that machine. I have out CD-ROM "II FreeCom" and i try to reinstall with that. In BIOS menu I acces for first boot drive...

you shouldn't need to have to press f9 to boot from cd rom if you have it set in the bios as the first boot device , are you sure the copy of windows on cd that you have is bootable. Try booting from the disc on another laptop or pc and see if you can start it

Another option to try is to boot from a usb drive

instructions on how to do that are here

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=118576

once you have booted to usb you should be able to access the cd rom

depending on what version of windows you are trying to install you will need to run different programs.

you could also install vista or windows 7 to usb drive and install it from that, it is much quicker than installing from cd/dvd you would need to be able to boot from usb to start with though

how to install vista or windows 7 from usb instructions can be found here

Use your mouse to RIGHT CLICK on an empty area of your desktop.
Select PROPERTIES.
Select SETTINGS tab.
Move the SCREEN RESOLUTION SLIDER to a different setting.
Click APPLY.
Keep trying different settings until you find one that is acceptable.
Then Click APPLY and OK and then reboot your computer.

That should do it.
Good luck and please rate this with 4 Thumbs Up if it was helpful.

I have a sony vaio pcg. it powers on and does nothing else. the 2 little cooling fans come on but the hard drive doesn't run and screen won't come on. can anyone help me out. thanks

Hello,

Its possible that you already have a bad hard drive. It may have crashed. Your system will not boot without the hard drive running. The computer will keep on trying to look for the Hard drive that's probably why it looks like its doing nothing. Bring your machine to sony and have them fix it. If you know how to open up your Vaio, try to check the Hard drive connection and see it its loose, if its not loose. its time to replace the hard drive.

I hope this helps. Thanks and have a nice day.

My sony vaio freezes at the sony screen during boot

Most likely a hard drive problem but could be a number of things. Try pressing tab or escape when it freezes and see if the screen switches and gives more information. If you are able, remove the hard drive and try booting again. (the cd/dvd drive could also cause this so try removing that if possible)

Call sony, the disk is 12 bucks. I had this problem after my hard drive crashed. Be careful though, because I replaced the hard drive and it would not recognize the disk after that. Sony wanted me to pay 100 dollars to fix it.
