If you have a frequency list it must be entered in a statistical list, L2, L3, ...or L6.
If the frequency of all elements is 1 you do not need to enter the frequency in a list. When you go to draw the box plot, the frequency will be set to 1.

When I try to graph it says-ERR:INVALID DIM 1:QUIT

You're probably trying to graph a function that does not involve stat plot features. You can correct this by turning off the stat plot features. Press "2ND" "STAT PLOT" and then select 4:PlotsOff.

When I entered my data in L2 because in L1 I don't know what happened is not on the screen then I press STAT and select CALC, then select 1- Var Stats and press enter I should be able to see the mean,...

When you select 1-Var Stats, specify L2. If you don't specify a list, the calculator will assume L1.

You can recreate L1 by pressing
2ND [{] 1 STO 2ND [L1]

{ is on the ( key.
L1 is on the 1 key.

I am trying to do a box plot with a TI-84 Plus Silver Edition. I've entered my data values into L1, turned on Plot 1, chosen the box plot, and made sure X1 was set to L1. I keep getting ERR: INVALID DIM....

Hey. I had the exact same problem as you and all I could do was reset the settings to the default settings on the calculator. All you have to do is turn the calculator on, his 2nd (it should say mem right above it). Then click reset then RAM.

Getting ERR: INVALID DIM when pressing the Graph button

If the message appears when you try to graph functions deactivate the statistical plots. To do so:

Press [2nd][Y=] to access (STAT PLOTs)
Select [4:PlotsOff] then [ENTER]

That should solve your problem. Post a comment to this thread if you still have trouble graphing. If the message appears in another context, it sure would help knowing the context of the error.

When I type a list of numbers into L1 and then hit Stat, calc, 1-var stats L1. i get invalid dim

  1. Press [STAT][5:SetUpEditor][ENTER].
  2. Press [STAT][1:Edit..]
  3. Enter your data in L1.
  4. Press [STAT][CALC][1:1-Var Stats].
  5. Command echoes on main screen.
  6. If ONLY one list contains data, it must be L1.
  7. When you do not specify the list in the command line it will take L1 by default.
  8. If L1 is empty and the data is in L2, or another but L1, the name of list must be specified.

Cannot graph invalid dim error

This error show up when you are graphing out of the plot menu. If you are not graphing data points from list menu, you need to turn the plots off. In the y= screen, you will see the words plot 1, plot 2, etc across the top of the screen. If one of the plots is highlighted (black box over the words), you need to turn it off. This can be done by arrowing up and highlighting the box and pressing enter. When you arrow back down, the plot should be off and you will be able to enter an equation in the y= lines and graph.

If you are graphing from the plot menu, this error lets you know that one of the lists you are graphing is longer than the other.

Another way to fix the problem is to reset the calculator by pressing 2nd button then plus sign then 7 then 1 then 2. This will reset the calculator however if you are graphing from lists, your data will be erased. Hope this helps.

INVALID DIM

on a calc that's work properly, in the 'y=' screen, none of the 'Plot#' things are highlighted. try pressing 'y=', and if you have a 'Plot#" in a black box, go up to it and press enter to un-highlight it.
either it will work as soon as you press 'graph',or you have another problem
