Question about Panasonic Kitchen Appliances - Others

1 Answer

I have discovered small white larvae (probably moth larvae) creeping out of the Panasonic bread machine (SD-253) when it is on (no activity when it is off) and I don't know whether the eggs were laid in the lid or in the part with the little window. How can I get into these two parts to clean them out. I cannot use the machine until I clean it out as they will get into the bread. I have had the machine for at least 5 years and it has never happened before.

I would recommend running a sacrifice loaf through and letting the cook cycle finish. It would be very surprising if any moth larvae could survive the ambient heat. Then give the bread to some ducks or inlaws:) Those areas of the machine are not really intended to be opened, so that is my best advice.
Bon apetite!

I have already put two loaves through, the little wretches just keep coming.... some do get cooked but others survive, there is usually one wriggling inside the control panel window! I wish I knew how many were in there.

Howdy, I am hoping that if I can come up with a better solution, you will upgrade me from one thumbs-up which equals "unhelpful solution". I try never to be glib and give actual consideration to all my solutions; here are my latest thoughts on your situation:

replace all your flour as the larvae arrive in the flour and will hatch over time.
    Store your flour in the freezer to keep it at its best (larvae free) and here's the best part;
either make room in your freezer for the bread machine to freeze to death any remaining larvae in the works or fumigate it with a nonpoisonous inert gas like carbon dioxide. An easy way to do this is to seal it in a garbage bag with some pieces of dry ice ( availabel from ice cream stores and on freight arrival days at some groceries). We use this method ourselves to keep our animal feed free of moths. If all else fails, give the machine to some ducks or inlaws and start over:)

    Thanks for the note.
    Best regards, Farmerbear at

Cannot get the reply button to work, so using comment. Sorry about the one thumb, but it did provoke you into more useful suggestions! And they may just do the trick if I can get the necessary. I also believe the larvae came from the flour and will have to try and find room for it in the freezer - good idea. However the freezer is far too small to take the machine and don't know anyone with a bigger one (we are in the UK....) so that one's out. Will have to find out about the dry ice - never had the need before! The last suggestion could be a problem as I have no in-laws (lucky me!) and the ducks have already refused the offer of damaged goods. If I can't get hold of any dry ice I'll have to spread my net wider for a larger freezer. So thank you again Farmerbear, you can have lots of brownie points this time, but can't see a thumbs score for your latest suggestion, how do I show it against this answer?

This is a very nice machine. If you want bread brown on top, cover pan with aluminum foil shinny side down. I dont like brown sides an white tops either. Enjoy.

Panasonic has the manual for the SD-YD250 here: . This manual has several recipes at the end. Some recipes should not be done completely in the bread machine. (Follow the directions on using bread-machine flour or bread flour; the differences in the protein contents will matter.)

I hope this helps.

I have just been given a panasonic sd 253,but no manual,i am new to breadmakers can you help, were can i get a manual

Have you tried the Panasonic web site? They often have manuals for download. If not any bread making book should help. The only thing to remember is that Panasonic machines work best with the yeast being put in first, then the flour. Any machine recipe can be used if you remember that rule.

I have a Panasonic SD-YD 150 that I bought at a church bazaar. I looked brand new, so I took a chance and bought it. Well, nothing happens when I press the START button. The red light is lit and the...

There may be nothing wrong. 4 hours is probably the length of the bread program you chose. All bread machines do that. After about 15 minutes your machine should start the kneading process with a slow pulsing mix. Some machines and programs don't do anything for the first 15-20 minutes. Whole wheat recipes especially have a built in delay before any kneading begins.

Bread does not rise

  • Make sure it is good quality Strong White Flour (not plain flour)
  • The amount of water you use is very important. Use scales for accurate results - 1ML = 1G for water
  • Make sure the yeast is as per instructions regards type/quantity/quality.
  • Double check that you are running the correct program.
  • Always put the yeast in first, as you dont want the water in contact with water
Having failed that I would return the machine
