Twist the bare conductors together tightly, matching the black and blue ceiling fan wires to the black power wire, and the white ceiling fan wire to the white power wire, don't forget the green ground !!

Green to Ground always first!
White to White next!
Black to Black
Red / From house wiring = HOT same as black. Do not tie to BLACK. If you have a light this is the feed to the black/blue wire from the light package.

SOURCE: wiring ceiling fans to wall switch

Hi Bigelow,

You need two switches.  It sounds like the Electrician set up the junction box for two circuits(Lights and Fans).  i say this because your supply has 4 wires, Red , Black, White and Bare. We may be able to oversome this with one Lutron Switch. Allow me to investigate, and I will be back.

20 year old Hampton Bay fan requires new 3-speed pull chain fan switch replacement. I did not copy the wiring pattern for the L, 1, 2 and 3 positions. There are 3-wires: black, white and blue.

Typically AC wire protocol designated black = line voltage (means \'death\') and white is neutral (cold).

The blue one will be a switched line to the motor and a meter capable of checking continuity should allow you to determine the proper wiring.

I did not make a diagram when replacing the light switch

Red from switch goes to two blacks, blue from switch goes to two blacks and the black wire goes thru top of light and attaches to blue fan light wire. If you want a good fan, look for blade pitch(13 degree or higher)Or CFM's above 5500 on high.

No wiring diagram with fan ( hampton bay three speed fan with light)

white to white, black to black, blue to red, & green to ground.
If you don't have a second hot house wire(red), then put black & blue from fan to house black.

Trying to connect a ceiling fan light kit. I connected the blue wire from the fan kit to the black wire in the light kit and then connected the white wire from the fan kit to the white wire in the light...

Those connections sound OK ,, now you have to go to the canopy and see if all the wires for the fan/light are connected to a house wire. If there are two switches , then the blue fan wire would connect to the red wire .. it may be capped off in the ceiling. If there is only one control switch , then the blue wire from the fan will connect to the same ceiling wire as the black fan wire does.

Hampton Bay Wiring?

You have two switches right? One for the light and one for the fan? White should be neutral. Green should be ground. Black should be hot from one switch and red should be hot from the other. Hook black to black and blue to red. If you wire blue and black together then one switch will turn on the fan and the light at the same time.

When I've installed these fans in the past, the blue wire was for power to the light kit. If you don't have a light kit, just tuck it out of the way.
