How To Fix Your Bissell Carpet Cleaner When Solution Doesn't Spray

If you have a Bissell Carpet Cleaner, and you're machine is not spraying water on the floor, there are several things that might be causing this. Here's a list of possible problems that might be causing the machine not to spray water:

It may be a problem with your pump belt. Bissell Carpet Cleaners use a belt that powers the pump to spray solution out. There are also a few other possible issues, but as a Bissell warranty station, the belt going bad out-numbers all other problems.

Remove the belt access door and inspect the pump belt to ensure it is not broken, worn or stretched. You may also check the belt by turning on the power and watching the brush on the bottom of the machine. If the brush rotates the belt is not broken.

If your belt is worn out or broken, here's a direct link to that belt on our website:
Bissell Pro-Heat, Pro-Heat 2 6960W Replacement Pump & Brush Belts

Here's a great video that will show you how to check, and replace the pump belt on your ProHeat carpet cleaner:
How To Replace the Bissell ProHeat 2X Carpet Cleaner Belt Video:
http://www.bissell.com/VideoRating.aspx?id=1555

If this was not the problem, here are some other things that you may check:

  • Make sure there is liquid in both the Tank-in-Tank and the SmartMix bottle. Both tanks must contain fluid or the machine will not spray properly.
  • Check for proper placement of the o-ring on the SmartMix Cap Insert (some o-rings are detachable and need to fit over the straw; others are molded to the cap).
  • Check for liquid in the base of the machine where the SmartMix Bottle sits (SmartMix Reservoir). If there is no liquid in the reservoir, the neck on the SmartMix Bottle may be undersized and the cap will not make proper contact with the unit. If there is no liquid present, you will need a replacement SmartMix Bottle.
  • Check for the black or red tank gasket on the SmartMix Bottle Cap and on the bottom of the Tank-in-Tank Assembly. If gasket is lodged in base of unit or has been lost, reattach gasket on auto-load or order new gasket if appropriate.
  • Check the valves on the bottoms of the Tank-in-Tank and SmartMix Bottle to make sure water/solution will come through when the "x" valve is depressed. (Bladder or SmartMix bottle may be empty or the valve may be blocked internally.) Use a soft-bristled brush and hot tap water to clear any debris. Replace autoload assembly or cap/insert if necessary.
  • Check if the small rounded window tabs on the top edge of the Floor Nozzle are locked in their mating slots on the base of the machine, and not inadvertently lifting the tank up out of place.

If these suggestions have not resolved the problem you are experiencing with your machine, you might want take your machine to a local BISSELL Authorized Service Center. I really hope that this information was helpful to you. If you find what's wrong with your Bissell and have specific questions about how you can fix it, please just let me know and I'll be happy to walk you through step by step to fix any problem you may have on your Bissell.

1672 BIGgreen Wet/Dry Vacuum: my bissell 1672 big green machine has stopped spra...

Refer to the discussion at the other thread: http://www.fixya.com/support/t3309646-pump_motor_sounds_like_running_but_not

You will need to remove the top domed lid to access the working parts. Refer to http://www.fixya.com/support/t3543424-two_top_sections_held_together

Examine the water lines to ensure they are attached to the pump. If you feel you can do so without shocking yourself on any exposed electrical connectors, try disconnecting the inlet hose. Buy a two-foot section of the same size hose from the hardware store and connect it to the pump inlet. Plug in2_bing.gif the unit (be careful!!!) and use the pump switch to see if it draws water. Then try reconnecting the inlet and connect the outlet to the new hose to see if the pump pulls water from through its suction tube and will pump through the new hose.

Bissell Proheat 1699-5 won't spray, belt ok

Hi There,

It sounds like to me that this may be your pump. The newer ProHeat 2X models actually have a Silinoid problem right now which is more common then the pump going bad, but if you have the original ProHeat series, then it sounds lik you have a bad pump.

Here's a link to a very, very helpful repair guide directly from Bissell that will explain to you step by step how to trouble shoot, and replace the pump if needed. I would be lost on the ProHeat series without this handy repair guide.

I'm pretty knowledgable now on these machines, if you need some help or some clarification on how to repair this, please feel free to reply to this repair by using the Clarification request form. If you found this helpful, please be so kind and rate my repair, and give feedback.

My bissell cleaner bottom brushes are not turning and the big tank of water is not working only the small stain tank is working. it is still sucking up the water

Check the brush drive belt has not broken by inspecting from underneath. See the manual pages 21 & 22 for removal instructions. Download a copy from the following link

http://uk.bissell.com/images/UserGuides/9500E.pdf

This may be caused because the pump belt has stretched or broken or the pump is seized and will not turn. Remove the pump belt and turn the pump rotor with your fingers to see it turns freely. If it does then the pump should be OK but the belt may be stretched and will need replacing. If the unit does not spray after changing the belt then clean the spray nozzles at the front of the machine and make sure that water flows to the nozzles OK. You can check this by temporarily disconnecting the nozzles from the plastic pipes.

Main causes for no spray.

Bladder may be empty.
SmartMix Bottle may be empty.
The Filter may be clogged.
Tanks may not be seated properly.
Pump may have lost prime.
The Pump Belt may be broken.

2 front jets are blocked. This is a common problem. When the machine is standing for a while the detergent turns to a gel causing the blockage Lay the Bissell on its side then where the water comes out of the jets at the bottom of the machine unblock them using a pin to poke through the hole in the centre.

Try running hot water through the system with no detergent to empty out all the residual detergent. Keep running hot water through the system by pressing the button you press for it to spray the water do this for about 5 mins and keep swapping the water for hotter water as it starts to cool doing this 4 or 5 times might solve your problem if not get the tools out and start looking for the blockage. Do this once a month to ensure that the pipes and jets are kept clean and free of any detergent gel build up.

How to install a new water pump on a big Green machine?

I have replaced this pump before, and had the pump "seize" again. I hooked the output of the bissel to a siphon pump to pull a vacuum while i had the input hose (with the little filter) submerged in a bucket of water. After i got the pump started, I submerged both the inlet and outlet hoses (after the trigger handle) into a bucket of warm water and turned the spray switch on to circulate clear water through the whole deal

Big Green

We found that ours had a simpler problem. Upon opening the motor compartment, we saw that the pump had "nudged" up from it's mounting slots. It is held down by a clip on each end and one had pushed up, allowing the pump to ride up and thereby disconnecting the short hose which kept the "suction train" intact. Once we re-seated the pump correctly and pushed the clip back down, the hose reached nicely and our suction was re-established.
Getting into the motor and pump area was the hardest part. Inside the power hose "cubbie" is a small hex head screw. Find your shortest stubbiest 1/4 inch open ended wrench to loosen this screw (lefty-loosey). Once the screw is out, gently pry along the edge with fingers and thumbs. The top (ours is green) part should separate itself from the bottom (ours is beige) part. The pump in our unit is red and has a 4-5 inch hose leading from the end of the pump to the outlet (on the outside of the green or top part). Re-assemble and go for it!

Bissell Big Green Machine Model 1672 will not pump cleaning liquid

have a Bissell Big Green 1672, the older canister model. Went crazy trying to figure out how to get to the pump. Finally figured it out. The top green "shell" covers the motor & pump and is separate from the "grey" plastic housing. Using a screw driver, insert it between the small gap between the top "shell" and the housing. If you look at it with it laying down on the top, you will see the small 1/4" gap. Gently pry in between the two and work your way around. It will start to lift up and then you can easily work your way around and it will pop off exposing the motor and pump. Note that the wires to the on/off & pump switches will sill be attached to the top shell. If you take them off note where they came from and make sure they are all on when you put the top back on. I have had my Green Machine for years, what a work horse! To bad they don't make them anymore, the new ones that replaced them just don't have the same durability and power as the older Green Machines.
