Windows XP needs at least 1 GB of RAM to function reasonably and for best performance, go to 2 GB. But that might not be the main problem. You really need to install the system drivers to make the O/S work with the hardware. Then run the command MSCONFIG from the command line and click the startup tab to see what might be running in the background. Uncheck the things you don't need.

Greetings I have a friend who has windows xp home edition and I need to find out where the ram specs are on that os as I am using a different Os...need some assistance

To find out how much RAM is currently installed on the Windows XP Home computer, right click on My Computer (either from the Start menu or desktop) and choose Properties. In the General tab it will tell you how much RAM is currently installed. To find out how much RAM you can install and what speed it has to be, go to Crucial.com and run their free memory scanner.

Slow start up....windows home edition of xp

I take it you mean that it started up faster before now?

Some things that can slow it down:
1) run scandisk
2) run defrag
3) run the command msconfig from the Start>run command
Remove unnecessary programs from the startup tab. This doesn't uninstall the programs, just tells them not to start. You may have spyware and adware running.
4) run a good malware detection program and scan for viruses.
5) Install more memory. In the beginning, many companies put 512 MB RAM in the XP machines. You need at least 1 GB of RAM to run smoothly and 2GB for best performance.

There is a program you can purchase (or it is more than likely available as a torrent) which will diagnose and fix almost any Hard Drive problem.

Sluggish slow performance and bad keys

Sounds like both machines may have spyware / malware on them. I would download Malwarebytes Anti-malware scanner, it is a free download; can be found here: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Paying for the program gives you "real time" protection, but it is fully operational without paying the only difference is no real time protection is offered.

This will get rid of a lot of the junk that often gets installed on a computer over time.

The other thing to look at is upgrading your RAM, a lot of computers are sold with only 256 MB of RAM on XP machines and 2 GB on Vista machines; these are the bare min required to run Windows; you should max out the RAM for your machine; depending upon the age of the machine you should be able to add anywhere from 2 GB to 4 GB of RAM, really old machines may have a cap limit of 512 MB or 768 MB check with your manufacture before purchasing. Some motherboards will support more than 4 GB but unless you are running XP 64 bit or a 64 bit version of Vista; the 32 bit OS is only going to see a max of 4 GB in XP Home Edition it seems to only see a max of 3 GB.

Partition

The best way to do this is to do a complete install of XP and wipe (format) your drive of everything else. You will need to back anything up that you want first though. Make sure you format it as NTFS

XP will run slow unless you have at least 512 mb. of ram and a 1Gig. processor. It can run on less but I do not install it on anything less because it will drag the computer down. More than I said is even better for it to run. If you need help loading it let me know. I will try my best to explain to you how to do this. You must already know since you tried already. Just make sure you do a clean install. Do you have the upgrade CD or the Full Version CD?
I can't fix this for you, but if I helped you get it fixed, please rate it as a fixya not a helpful rating. These ratings let me be allowed to help you and others in the future. If you need more help, feel free to keep asking, but keep the original information so I can see it.

US-144 on Windows XP home giving problems

One guess, is that the RAM in your system is too small. Try expanding to 1G by adding 512mb (if you have an available slot), or expand by adding a new module.

US-144 on Windows XP home giving problems

Hi
Try Winxp Pro, if it doesn't work then do upgrades one by one to avoid spending too much, increase the memory, the harddisk and the video card...
It needs a lot of space for recording, a lot of memory for processing before saving, and the video card to improve performance of the computer.
Goodluck !!!
