You can try a few things to get it working again. If you're lucky, it's just dirt, lint, or a sand particle that's obstucting the lens. This blog delineates the steps you can take to try to free it up.
If none of them work, the camera will have to be disassembled completely to figure out the problem, and if you elect to have it serviced, it can run a bit. Try these steps, and hopefully you will have some luck with them:
http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/fixing-lens-error-on-digital-camera.html
Even though the article says "lens error", it applies to stuck lens assemblies, and the zoom functions.
It's also possible that the zoom lever switch is broken, but again, the camera has to be taken apart to discern that.
Anyway, good luck, hope this helps, and thanks for using FixYa.

It could be yet another glych with Vista. Try contacting the Microsoft website, and if there is not a specific patch available - email them.

The Olympus website may have something -

NEW DOWNLOADS FROM OLYMPUS

If this still does not work - Email Microsoft or Olympus directly, as you may not be the only one in this situation.

Zoom malfunctioning

This sounds like there is debris lodged in the zoom gears. Been to the beach lately? The gears in the zoom mechanism are very small, and even a tiny spec of sand or other debris can jam them up. Alternatively the sensor inside the lens that feeds back the position of the lens to the control circuit may be failing - so the camera thinks the lens has retracted all the way and stops. If the stoppage of the zoom action is abrupt then it is probably debris, if it is a smooth stoppage like the camera is stopping on purpose it is probably a position sensor. Either way the camera will require repair. David Millier Advance Camera Repair
