Question about Audio Players & Recorders

Open Question

I have just purchased a Samsung HT-C655W home theatre system with the Samsung series 6 LCD TV. I am unable to get sound from the rear and centre speakers unless I use a 5.1 DVD. TV and CD,s will only give sound from the front speakers. I have connected my Sky box and HT-C655W using HDMI cables. I have also connected an optical audio cable from my Sky box to the HT-C655W system. I am also unable to get any response from the Dolby PL II button on the remote. The ASC auto sound has been tuned off as per the instruction booklet. I get sound from all speakers when I carry out the test from the HT-C655W system, which means that everything is connected ok. Thanks Rob.

SOURCE: Onkyo TX-SR500 Dolby Digital problem

I just read over the problem you were having with your Onkyo TX-SR500 receiver. It sound like the unit needs to be setup for all five channels.Sence your symptom says the diplay shows Dolby D3/2.1. According to the owners manual with the remote control look for speaker setup whin the button is pressed the current speaker setup will be shown in the display. Press the preset/adjustment<> to change the current setting to five speakers. the listening mode will automatically change according to the number of channels you selected. Hope this helps. SOURCE: I am trying to connect

On the rear of the receiver you will notice several AUDIO IN connections. Make sure that the AUDIO IN and the receiver's input selector match (for example, if you are connected to AUDIO IN for the VCR section, the input selector on the FRONT of the receiver should also be VCR). Also, make sure that the input selector you are using is set to "Digital Audio" or a digital audio enabled equivalent and NOT analog. Check all connections again to make sure you have not grounded any speaker wire. Check to see if "MUTE" is on TV or Receiver. Try another audio in source just to make sure the speakers are connected properly. If that works, you can pretty much decide that it's either the input selection is wrong or the audio source is not set to digital 9also check to see if PCM is enabled and try setting to "AUTO" if you have that function. If you have option on receiver for speakers A and B, make sure selection matches your wiring.

SOURCE: PCM vs Dolby Digital

OK, I just figured this out. Go to the audio options in your DVD player and switch from pcm to bitstream. Now my movies sound right again.

SOURCE: 8' Optical Cable from TV to Receiver and Signal is Breaking Up

Before you buy anything try checking the AUDIO Settings in the Menu of Each Device (Mostly TV) and see if they are set to PCM or BITSTREAM. HDMI is mostly set to PCM while Optical is generally Bitstream. The TV may be set to the opposite of what it needs to be. I would try to get PCM to work first cause it is Better, If not then set what you can to Bitstream and it should pass. Also check in TV Menu for SOUND OUT or AUDIO OUT or SPEAKERS. Some TV's have a problem passing Audio through when they are already Outputting them to it's own Speakers! I Hope this Helps out!
