Hi, this is pretty easy,

Computers about 5 - 6 years old are usually use IDE hard drives, most modern units, are indeed Sata, but if your want a proper reassurance, just open the case and look at the cables. If you see a wide, gray cable that sticking out the hard drive, then your computer is using IDE hard drives. If they're thin (a little wider than your thumb), then you computer is using SATA hard drives. A picture of both types of cables is included below. :D Source(s): IDE Cable:http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/cata…
SATA Cable:http://sierra-cables.com/SATA/images/SAT…

Both cables, for comparison:http://www.ackadia.com/computer/images/s…

Sata cable & pata cable have a any jumper setting

Hi,
The hard drive / optical drive have jumper settings, not the motherboard. PATA has jumper settings, but SATA do not require any. The diagram of the setting is drawn on the hard disk itself below the serial number etc. For SATA, look on the motherboard for the SATA ports. Each port will be named as like SATA 0, SATA 1 etc. If you want the hardd disk to boot first, plug it in SATA 0. and the next device in SATA 1. However, you can also set the first and other boot device from the BIOS itself, in case of SATA.

How to install windows server 2008 on intel dh61ww motherboard

First off are you using SATA or PATA drives ?

The easiest route is to use PATA as the first drive but this may have speed issues depending on what you intend the server to end up doing. WS2008 will see the drive and will give the options of formating etc before doing the install.

IF however

You use SATA then you may well need to direct the installation to a driver disk for the SATA side. This can be on floppy or usb key (if usb is formatted for emulation etc) or even a rom drive.

As with xp, windows7, vista, SBS 2003, etc you will see a chance to use F6 to direct it to drivers during the early phase.

All I can see from your question is that you want to install NOT what you have managed so far. those details would be crucial to a fuller answer.

I have a GT4016 Gateway Desktop. I want to purchase a 2Terra Internal Hard Drive. Would this be a Sata or Pata Drive

If the computer is already open its easy to tell if you have SATA or PATA capabilites. Most modern computers have SATA and maybe one PATA. An SATA plug looks like a sideways L. The PATA ports have a couple rows of pins and require a cable ribbon. If you have both kinds of ports you should go with the SATA because this has a much higher bandwith (1.5 Gbps I think)

Hard drive problem

New hard drive $40 to $60.. www.Tigerdirect.com www.frys.com www.bestbuy.com etc..

Main thing you need to know is SATA or IDE (aka .. PATA) Sata or serial uses small half inch wide cables . IDE / PATA uses 3inch wide ribbon cables. Pop the PC open andlook at the hard drive to see the cables attached. Most new drives come with basic instructions.

BIOS will not let me change boot sequence of hard drives. It lists both of them (one SATA and one IDE). Trying to recover info off IDE, primary OS is on SATA. How do I get BIOS to let me change sequence?

check the the jumper pins on the back of the HHD, SATA should be set to master & IDE to slave read the top of the HHD first coz some HHD's have master without slave presant.
boot up as normal then go into "computer" & get the data off the IDE drive.

Trying to install a Samsung PATA 160GB HD in my recently bought ued Solo 5300.I see no cables etc, just some pins at the back of the HD slot. Do I need to take the whole unit apart to get at any cables?...

larry, is your motherboard PATA capable? meaning, are there 4-8 red female connectors on your motherboard?
If there is no compatibility with your PATA/IDE Motherboard, you can purchase at any local computer shops PATA-IDE converters... ranging $15USD.
This converts the PATA DATA+Power to your motherboard.
The HD you have requires Jumpers. Hence why they look like card slots on the back.
Before purchasing any cables, be sure to notice if your motherboard is PATA capable and relieve less stress on you :)

Your motherboard does NOT support SATA drives, without an added SATA controller. It does support PATA drives, such as the Samsung SP2514N and the Seagate PATA drive you listed, as well as any other PATA drive. A PATA drive may be referred to as PATA, IDE, ATA100, ATA133, or even ATA66, but not SCSI, Ultra320, U320, or SATA, SATA II, SATA100, SATA300, etc.

The Seagate drives are easy to identify, their model number ends in AS if it is a SATA drive, and just A if it is a PATA drive.
