I have a hitachi 250 GB external hard drive. Whenever i copy abit bigger file it automatically disconnects and reconnect and hence the data isn't copied then. I tried many ways to fix it but it didn't work. By the way i am using windows XP, i would be highly thankful if you could suggest me some ways to fix it. Thanks

Try attaching the Hitachi to a different USB port. After connecting to the USB port, go to Control Panel->Administrative tools->Computer Management->Disc Management. And see if it is visible here? If yes, then you can do what you want with it. If not, then I am sorry about the HDD. I think it is still under warranty. Please make use of the warranty and return the HDD and ask for a replacement. It being a USB HDD there is nothing wrong you could have done to it. In an internal HDD you could have connected the data cable the wrong way and have caused the damage, but not in a USB HDD. So the replacement process should be smaller and smoother.

File size limit for Buffalo HD 250 GB Hard Drive backup

The file is too large meaning that the size of that SINGLE file is too large. Your hard disk is probably formatted to a FAT32 file system, this results in a maximum of 4gb PER FILE maximum transfer. What you could do is archive it into a few parts using winrar and then moving it onto the disk, and when you need the file just extract the archive. Your problem isn't the total free space, it's the size of that file chunk.

I want to take some programmes my hard drive and use them in my external hard drive.

There are essentially two types of data that are written to a harddrive.
1. Programs (such as Microsoft Excel) 2. Data that are created by the Programs (XLS files)
In order to "move" PROGRAMS, they have to be first uninstalled from the original harddrive; then reinstalled onto your external harddrive.
In order to move DATA, simply do a copy and paste from the original drive to the new drive.

-you did not mention what process you used to save the files. Did you use the software that came with the drive to save data? or built-in software of windows? -If you still can, try the manual way of saving files like highlighting files/folders then copying them to the external drive.

How do I completely reset my external hard drive

1. You need to check how much free disk space is available on your laptop.
2. You need to check what duplicated files you have on both the laptop and the external hard drive and which is the latest version.
3. You need to decide to move the latest versions of the data files from the external hard drive to the laptop. This automatically delete these from the external hard drive. The older versions on the external hard drive can be deleted.
4. Now you need to check how much data is stored on your external hard drive.
5. If the amount of data stored on the external hard drive exceeds the available disk space on the laptop, then you cannot copy these files to the laptop.
6. If you have sufficient disk space on the laptop you can copy the data from the external hard drive to the laptop. I suggest you make a folder to copy this data to it.
You can now delete all the data from the external hard drive or you can format the external hard drive to make a clean external hard drive.
