Question about GE 20.6 cu. ft. / 583 liter Upright Freezer FUM21DRR

1 Answer

FUM21D upright freezer, NOT frost free. Top shelf coil cooling, others are not. Sides are not as warm as usual. Running constantly. Coolant leak? Why top shelf cooling?

I note this is in fact not a frost free freezer and that there is not an evaporator OR a condensor fan. If it is running constantly and the cooling coils are clear as in not covered in lint then the most likely cause is a low coolant level. A low coolant level will allow partial but not total system cooling. The only way to know for sure is to have the systems pressures tested. At that point who ever checks the coolant pressure will have to determine why the coolant leaked out, repair the leak and then re-service the system with coolant.

Why is it taking newly placed things days to freeze in my upright freezer? Already frozen things are still rock-hard.

Confirm freezer temperature to be about 0 F or coolder. Suggest if frost free near the air flow if not frost free on lower shelf with cooling coils.

From what you have described it sounds like you might be experiencing some form of sealed system issue, faulty defrost timer or a bad door seal. This can include the compressor not working correctly, the evaporator fan not turning, or even coolant in the lines not at the correct levels to properly cool. If the compressor is running, humming, or even a little warm then that is typically normal. However if the compressor is running hot, then it is over working and the issue could be before the compressor in the evap fan, coil or coolant lines. Trying checking if the door seal is bad; place a dollar bill between the body of the freezer and close the door. The dollar bill should stay in place and pull out with a small amount of resistance. If the dollar bill falls out when placed between the gasket and cabinet double check the door from closing then replace the gasket. If any proves to be ineffective, you would need to contact your manufacturer and then a professional to move forward accurately.

Frigidair FFU21C3AW1 cooling slowly

When it comes to freezer units, there is not much one can do on their own. You can try to move it around and clean any debris from underneath and behind it. You can see if the internal temperature matches what you have it set on, and then you'll need to contact a professional to diagnose the actual sealed system of the unit.

Hi,
Yes, it does sound like you have a slight leak and a recharge is needed...
But...

Be very careful as to who you get to do that as many are not experienced enough to work on fridge units...they are very touchy and need to be serviced by someone familiar with the small refrigeration units and also someone that is licensed to use refrigerants...

Hi,

As the weather is getting warmer for many people their freezer and/or refrigerator do not work right because of a dirty condenser coil...there are also many other things that can go wrong. If you are hearing a clicking or buzzing then check out the last two tips.

I have bad news for you. EAch of your shelves is part of the evaporator coil. This is the coil where the liquid refrigerant expands into a vapor. If only one shelf has frost, and the other shelves no longer do, then you have a low side sealed system leak of your refrigerant. You could have it repaired, but that is a major service call, and to have it repaired properly to EPA regulations, it is quite expensive.
sorry

Upright freezer-only top shelf gets frost

it may be that the door is open a lot witch lets in warm air that go's to the top of your freezer and turns into ice so there maybe nothing wrong with your freezer, in winter we heat the house up and close all the windows this holds in the damp air,, in the summer it should be ok, but to test it place a thermometer in the freezer is should be about -21*f or there abouts for a 4 star freezer

The sides of my freezer are very hot while the top, front and back are cool to the touch. The freezer still is freezing items fine.

In the newer freezers and refrigerators they are mounting the condenser coil in the side panels of the freezer or refrigerator eliminating the large usually black frame work of tubing that used to be mounted on the back. This saves room but causes the sides to be warm as the heat is now dissipated by the side panels. You should have about an inch of clearance on both sides to let air flow over the side panels to cool them. I have a newer side by side and it also is feels quite warm when you put your hand on the side.

Upright freezer not cooling

The model number would help but it sounds like a sealed system leak or restriction. If thats the case I would not suggest trying this yourself. The water should freeze overnight and the frost should keep going to all the shelfs that have coils in them.

Upright Freezer self defrosting

THE (SUCKING AIR) OCCURS WHEN THE TEMP IS VERY LOW IN THE FREEZER AND YOU LET WARM AIR IN BY OPENING THE DOOR. WHEN THE DOOR IS CLOSED, THE WARM AIR IS COOLED CAUSING A VACUUM IN THE FREEZER. IF THE DOOR SEAL HAS A LEAK AROUND IT, THE SUCKING SOUND WILL NOT TAKE PLACE. CHECK THE DOOR SEAL FOR A GAP AT ONE OF THE CORNERS OR ALONG THE SIDES,BACK, BOTTOM, OR TOP.IF THE SEAL IS O.K., HOW IS THE TEMP? IF THE TEMP SEEMS WARM, YOU MAY NEED TO CHECK THE SEALED SYSTEM. LOOK AT THE FROST PATTERN ON THE EVAPORATOR. IS IT COMPLETE AND UNIFORM? IS ONLY PART OF THE EVAPORATOR FROSTED BACK? IF THE ENTIRE EVAPORATOR IS FROSTED BACK UNIFORMLY, THE SEALED SYSTEM IS O.K.
