Question about Kenmore Sewing Machines

1 Answer

I own an older Kenmore sewing machine, model # 158 1765180. i have misplaced my sewing Manuel. i haven't used the machine for a little while now that i want to sew it seems to be messed up, it doesn't want to sew more than a few stitches before it gets tangled around the bobbin and the thread breaks, i have adjusted the tension on the top of the machine, finally got the bobbin in the right direction, would it just need cleaning or what, i am baffled and with out my book just lost.

SOURCE: upper thread getting tangled in the bobbin

Always remember T-N-T. Thread, Needle, Tension. Assuming its threaded properly, is the needle all the way in and facing the right direction? These symptoms also suggest the bobbin may be in the bobbincase upside down thus turning in the wrong direction. Hope this helps.

SOURCE: my bobbin keeps getting tangled up when I sew

Take the thread out of the top and bottom and turn the handwheel by hand to see if the machine will rotate smoothly.
Rethread, making sure that the thread is in the bobbin tension slot and that the upper thread is in the tension and the take up lever.

Sorry for the delay in response. I just found the sight this evening.

SOURCE: tension

Check your tension disks, with your presser foot up, and the tension dial on zero. Sometimes a piece of cotton breaks off between the tension disks and then prevents the disks to work properly. Also make sure when you thread the machine, the thread does go through the disks and over the take up lever. After you threaded the machine, before putting the thread through the eye of the needle, lower the presser foot and while pulling on the thread with your left hand, increase the tension with your right hand. Do it slowly and you should feel in difference in tension. If this is the case, your machine should work fine.

SOURCE: bobbin tension

If the looping is happening on the underside, it is your top tension that is to blame, conversely looping on top is bobbin tension.........take a look HERE for detail on cleaning lint buildup.

Top tension should be set around the middle of the range, usually 4 - 6.

I would not advise playing with bobbin tensions, however, you can take the needle plate off to clean the hook race area (where bobbin case sits) ...this is good housekeeping, my wife does this every time she replaces the bobbin....just take it out and clean the bobbin case and the fixed metal hook race with a small brush to remove lint, if there appears to be fine dirty deposits, a cloth or cotton bud (Q tip) moistened (not soaked) with methylated spirit will do the trick.

You may need to tighten your upper thread tension or loosen the tension on your bobbin. I don't know if you are using a newer model sewing machine or an older one; but if it is like mine, there is a little screw on the bobbin you turn to loosen the tension.
My Kenmore sewing machine bunches up on the bottom if I am using a different type of thread in the bobbin than I am using on the top part of the sewing machine.

I need a manuel for 11206609 I am trouble with the bobbin catching and the thread is bunching. I also need to a manuel to see how to properly thread the machine.

I can't find a manual for that exact model, but I found a service manual and instruction manual for a 11206630. They will, hopefully, be close to your machine. Normanlly, when the model numbers are that close, the manuals are very close as well.

I have an older model Kenmore Sewing machine model # 158 12310. I was told by a local sewing machine repair business that it was not worth the money to have it cleaned and oiled. The machine works fine.I ...

Do you have your owners manual? If not, go to Sears parts direct and buy one. This will tell you where to put the oil. Now you probably will want to get under the throat plate, just use a small stubby screwdriver and take off the throat plate, usually you find something that looks like felt and thread. There is not felt, so clean that little bugger out. Sometimes you can find tips on the internet for lubricating and cleaning. I think the repair person was not very knowledgeable to say that, the older machines made better than anything today. Take care of it, I still have my first sewing machine, an Old Kenmore and it is my work horse, It will sew anything that my new expensive machines cannot handle.

I was given my mothers singer sewing machine model#4572. I have read the whole manuel and do not see anything about oiling it anywhere. All other machines I have had need to be oiled regular. Does this...

Hi! Some of the newer machines don't need oiling, but I would think an older Singer would require it. Use a little flashlight and look for tiny oil holes. If in doubt, a drop of oil wherever metal moves against metal can't hurt.
