e-Guru, thanks those are great resources that I will use. The only issue I have is that my motherboard doesn't seem to have a SATA connector on it - only ide. I did see that they sell adapters - do they work OK?

Yes your Dell Optiplex 170L has 3 PCI slot so you can install a PCI SATA controller in any of the 3 slots. Note if the controller cards does not come with any SATA cables you will need to purchase them as well. The link below has an example of a SATA cable.

Hi

You have a SATA hard drive port, which means you can use any 3.5" (desktop) SATA hard drive. The current max capacity is 2TB

How can I attach a Samsung hard disk HD080HJ/P to a Dell Optiplex 755 Core 2 Duo E4400 PC computer? There seems to be no master/slave settings on the hard drive.

Newer sata drives do not rely on the master/slave settings that old IDE drives used. Remove the old drive from the bad computer and plug it into an available slot in the new computer. Boot the new computer. Under My Computer/Computer the second drive will show up with the next letter available. Alternately you can buy an external hard drive dock that connects via usb and use that to transfer your files.

I have a dell optiplex and the hard drive has been removed how do i get new hard driveto run tried to install windowsxp disk failed on restart would not find hard drive HELP

Did you replace the old hard drive with a new one?
Check the connections on the drive itself. When you plugged the new one in, there should have been two cables you plugged into it. 1 small one that goes to the motherboard (called the SATA cable), and one wider one which comes right out of the power supply. If either of these is not plugged into the hard drive, you would get a message that says "could not find drive".

Check your connections and try again. If they're ok, then write back with as much detail as you can provide.

Good luck!

Hi i have a dell dc550 motherboard and want to put a 1 TB hard drive on it can I ?? The computer is a optiplex 170L

Yes you can. If you are adding a second hard drive, don't forget that you will need to purchase an additional SATA cable.
If you are replacing your current hard drive, you shouldn't need any additional cables.
Download the hard disk drive's manufactures tools software to setup your SATA drive. Make sure the bios see's your 1TB drive listed. If it is going to run your operating system check the Boot section in your bios & make sure it is listed in the boot order.

Cheers!

Hard drive

If you look at the hard drive inside your computer, there will be 2 cables plugged into it. If one of the cables is a flat cable about 2 inches wide, then its IDE interface type.
