If you think you may have an incorrect ip address, that probably means you changed it by setting a static address. Most systems (with the exception of business systems using domains), use auto ip addressing. Logging on to most wifi hotspots and most home wireless routers requires auto ip addressing. To set yours to auto (this is with XP, I think Vista and Windows 7 is similiar, you just find the controls in slightly different places) go to Control Panel, then to network connections, then right click on the 1394 connection and select properties. In the new pop-up box, if it is not already selected, select tcp/ip and then click properties. (You can also double click the tcp/ip item). In the new pop-up box, make sure both "obtain ip address automatically" and "obtain dns server automatically" are both selected by using the radio buttons. Click Ok on both pop-up boxes to close. While you're in the area, the control panel should still be open. Double click "internet options." Then click on the connections tab, and towards the bottom, click on the lan button. On the new pop-up box, uncheck automatically detect settings. This usually makes you wired connection faster.

Dns error on sylvania netbook

DNS is Domain Name Server. It translates an IP to a name. Disregard if it is a web site. You have no control.

Most people don't have a static DNS IP or name in the Network Connections > Properties > Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) > Properties. This setting is mostly reserved for larger networks like at work.

Wireless router should be at default and have the same IP as the router. It takes the role of DNS Server.

It wont conect to the internet says that there is a dns error

The "DNS-servers" on the Internet convert names, e.g., '' to IP-addresses.
If you don't have a valid connection to the Internet, you cannot contact any DNS-server,
and your computer thus cannot "talk" to the DNS-server to get the IP-address of any web-site.

Fix your lack of Internet connection, and the "DNS error" will also be corrected.

DNS Error Fix
In most cases, a DNS error just means that the computer is facing connectivity problems. This could be happening for a variety of reasons, especially if you are connecting to the Internet via a wireless connection. Since DNS transforms the website URL into a numerical IP address, without the DNS functioning properly, the Internet connection will be quite useless. There are a few solutions to this problem though, and none of them are too complicated in nature.
  • Locate the networking icon on your taskbar (or visit the networking tab from your 'Start' menu), and right click on it. Now select the 'Repair' option. This should be able to fix elementary DNS errors.
  • Go to the 'Start' menu and select the 'Run' option. Now type 'ipconfig/release' and hit 'OK'. This will release your old IP address. Now you need to type 'ipconfig/renew' and hit 'OK' in order to renew your current IP address.
  • You even have the option of entering your own DNS settings. If you are using a local wireless connection, you will be informed about the preferred DNS and the alternate DNS. You can alter this setting by going to the 'Properties' of your network connection.
  • You must also check if all the cables and wires are connected properly. If nothing works, then try using a different machine with the same connection.

I am able to connect to the wireless router, but I am unable to access the internet. This is a problem with the Sylvania netbook only..i am connected to the internet on another laptop. Please...

The router did not assign an IP address to the netbook ... so first try this

try resetting the router (unplug for a few minutes) next --be sure the wifi switch is enabled on the netbook---next---go to CONTROL PANEL>NETWORK CONNECTIONS--right click oin your wifi card and choose properties--highlight INTERNET PROTOCOL and choose properties and be sure "OPTAIN IP ADDRESS AUTOMATICALLY" is checked--Does the laptop "SEE" the router?
You will need your SSID to logon to the router(internet)

If this was helpful, please indicate so, if not -comment back so we can dig further to resolve this

I have a Sylvania netbook. I could connect to my router and my neighbors unlocked router on my laptop and palm pilot but not the Sylvania netbook. Tech support had me reset it, turn off and on the wifi...

I had a similar problem, and tech support from Sylvania didnt't help. At the end, they told me they would have a higher level tech call me, which of course, never happened. The issue relates to a Windows CE 6.0 problem making contact and receiving an IP address from the router (in my case, I have a DLINK DI-825 router. Since I don't know your router addresses, I will use mine as an example. My router self assigns to as the gateway. You will have to manually assign to get things to work. If you are going to use wireless, make sure to turn on (click wifi power icon, then click power ON. the button will change to power off -- shut the window by clicking ok (do NOT click power off). For ethernet, plug in your cable. Now you must manually assign the IP addresses (this is the windows CE problem.) Click START>NETWORK&Dialup Connections. This brings up a window with icons for each type of connection. The ethernet connection starts with GET, the wireless connection starts with RT. Click the appropriate icon for the connection you are using. You will have to manually assign an IP address on your home network (ask whoever set up your router if there is a problem) I use Click specify and IP address, put in the address you want to manually assign to the netbook, the subnet mask is (universal for home network) and put in you router ip (as I mentioned, in my system). Now click on the name server tab and fill in primary dns ip and secondary (public name servers) Click OK button in upper right corner of window to save settings. Reboot the system. If using wireless, one extra step. Click on the network item in the lower right hand portion of the windows CE taskbar for the wireless connection you want to use. Make sure your password is set up properly and click connect/OK (WEP or WPA or WPA2 all will work.) You should be online. If you take your netbook out, you have to undo the manual IP addresses to log onto public networks, since they often have more complex setups and do not allow you to set up manual (ie static) ip addresses. Hope this helps. Unfortuantely this is a Windows CE issue which is why Macs, Windows XP, Palms, iphones, and linux computers all work without a problem but windows CE doesn't. Good luck and post if this helps you.

I had the same problem but fixed it! its simple, go to network and dial up connections in control panel and change your internet adapter card to obtain ip address via dhcp. to do this just double click on it or right click and change the properties. if you are not sure which one is your wifi adapter just do it to all of them till it works. also make sure u have set up yr encryption properly.
