Is the calculator not working, or is the screen blank?

TI calculators have an annoying habit of dimming the screen when the batteries are changed so that it appears as if the calculator isn't turning on. Turn the calculator on (or at least press the ON key). Press and release the 2ND key. Press and hold the Up-arrow key for a few seconds and see whether the screen becomes legible.

My calculator keeps showing the number 1 and is completely frozen. I can't clear it or turn it off. I've tried replacing the batteries and it's not working. Help!!!

There should be a backup battery in the calculator that you can remove also. This battery keeps power to the calculator when the main batteries are removed so that information doesn't get lost while you change them. Try taking this battery out for a second along with the main batteries and that might fix your issue.

The calculator is 1 year old and most of the keys quit working

Doesn't sound like you have much to loose, because it is not functional.

First, unplug the calculator and take any batteries out of it.

I would take the calculator apart and clean the inside. Someone may have spilt coffee, tea, or pop on it. I would use warm water and some dish washing (not dishwasher) soap and dry it with a towel. Make sure the calculator is dry before powering up the calculator.

Good luck.

My TI 84 calculator has random symbols that don't erase. none of the buttons really work and the button next to the (2nd) button makes the calculator turn off. however when i turn it back on the...

Reset the calculator by taking out all of the batteries, then hold down the power button for 30 seconds. Replace the batteries and see if it works again. If not, remove all of the batteries again, this time include the backup battery (you'll need a small phillips screwdriver). Wait 5 minutes and reinstall the batteries. Hope it works for you. g.

It is frozen. the cursor is blinking but none of the buttons work, not even to turn it off or clear the memory. i need this for a test tomorrow. HELP!!

I just had the same problem a few minutes ago and I managed to somehow fix it. Here's what I did:

1. Remove the back cover
2. Unscrew the little screw where it says "back-up battery"
3. Pull the cover off
4. Push in on the circular battery and then let go
5. Replace the cover, and make sure to screw the screw in tight

If that doesn't work, do the same process except remove the AAA batteries before you unscrew the 2nd cover. The manual says not to do that because you might lose memory, but if it's your last resort then it's worth a shot.

Hope that helps, there's a ton of reasons your calc could be malfunctioning so I don't guarantee that this will work.

Sony A100 - Buttons won't work

This sounds odd, I know, but I found a solution that worked for me. I had exactly the same problem: picture taking was wonky, menu button, playback button wouldn't work. It would do this immediately upon starting up, every time.
What worked was when I adjusted the "exposure" by holding the +/- button and turning the little dial near the shutter button. It makes absolutely no sense, but somehow it suddenly started working perfectly again. And it hasn't glitched up again yet.
Hope it works for you, too.

None of my buttons work except the ON button

Sounds like a possible short to me, But I don't have experience with that cause I have yet to test my calc with water if you know what I mean... The one thing that I can suggest is trying to connect with another persons calc and try the "send OS" command to see if that will reset your calc to a working state. Sorry to hear about the damage though.

Make sure to replace the "battery backup" too the little lithium ion battery

Try Adjusting contrast:
Hold down "[2nd]" key press up or down arrow repeatedly to lighten or darken contrast.

First attempt reseting:
Step 1: Remove all the batteries
Step 2: Hold "Clear" key down
Step 3: Still holding "Clear" key reinstall batteries
Step 4: Still holding "Clear" key press "On" key until home screen is displayed.

Second shot reseting:
remove all batteries including lithium ion (backup battery), wait 3 hours and reinstall batteries.

Third Shot reseting:
Step 1: Remove a battery
Step 2: Hold down "DEL" key reinstall battery
Step 3: Possible msg pops up saying "Waiting ... Please install software" IGNORE msg and take out battery again
Step 4: Reinstall battery do not hold down "DEL" key

reseting will cause the handheld to loose all of its stored memory.

Hope that helps!
