Question about HP DesignJet 130 InkJet Printer

My lightly used 130 is giving printhead error messages(blinking tips on the LCD screen) on 3 brand new printheads (supplied by HP for in-warranty printheads) The tech told me the main carriage assembly must be at fault from wear and tear (he said at first, until I told him the printer has saw very light use, then it was because of the light use it went bad!) They want $599. for next day service or $509. for 3 day service. I'm going to call my local HP service center for a quote tomorrow. Questions: Does the techs diagnoses sound correct? Is there any checks that can be done to verify the diagnoses? Thanks in advance

    The printheads in question are 2 days old! This is NOT the problem. I have taken them out and clean and reseated them.

    There is no way to test print, or get diagnostic info while the 'pen tips' are blinking on the LCD screen

I'm not inclined to agree with their diagnosis. Here's an HP site that goes over the instllation of prinheads, and perhaps a review might help you spot something:

I'm like you, I can't imagine the carraige assembly being bad after such low usage.

No, it can't be wear and tear. It's way more likely that, because you used it rarely , the ink has dried in the print heads.
The only thing you can do is to print a test page if you can.
Take the heads out and soak them in warm distilled water, wipe them with a paper towel and repeat the procedure until the towel remains clean. Then make sure that the contacts on the carriage are clean and in good order, put the heads back and do a few deep cleaning cycles before attempting a new printing

    You should have said that first. In that case the heads are faulty - they should be replaced by them free of charge, they failed while in warranty.

How to fix hp 8600 damaged cartridge message?


If you observe the error message "One of more ink cartridges may be missing or damaged", "Cartridge Damaged", or "Ink Cartridge Failure", "The following cartridges are not intended for use in this Printer", etc. then the printer is not recognizing the installation of the refilled ink cartridge(s) or 'smart chip' which is affixed to the rear side of ink cartridge is causing the detection issue. This type of issue can also be caused by a bent pin on the PRINTHEAD assembly or one (or more) electrical contacts are dirty on the PRINTHEAD assembly (especially if the same error occurs with a brand new HP ink cartridge).

(1) It is first suggested you remove the respective ink cartridge from the printer and thoroughly clean the cartridge's smart chip's gold contacts/electrical surfaces using an isopropyl dampened lint-free towel. Ensure no ink residue is present on surface of the chip. Also ensure the chip is located in the proper position. Please refer to the 2nd photo on the following Inkjet411 support page - carefully inspect chip position to ensure it was properly placed: http://inkjet411.com/?page_id=1999 Following cartridge 'smart chip' gold contact cleaning, please re-install the ink cartridge and retest.

(2) Remove PRINTHEAD from printer and inspect for damage to contact pin(s) on the INSIDE OF THE PRINTHEAD ASSEMBLY. Please refer to printhead removal procedure below for reference. Often, you can gently bend the pin back into position to correct the issue.

SPECIAL NOTE FOR BRAND NEW HP PRINTER MODELS (temporary issue until approx. mid to late August 2014):
If you continue to observe "One of more ink cartridges may be missing or damaged" alert messages, please note that printer firmware versions CKP5CN1334ER for the newer HP Office jet Pro 8100 and 8600 printer series (manufactured after Nov./Dec. 2013) do not allow the replacement chip to function (this problem temporarily impacts brand new HP printers only -- this problem will be resolved sometime in June 2014 with the release of upgraded smart chips to all Costco stores which will work in the newer printer models).

Confirm if your printer is impacted:

1. Verify 8100/8600 printer firmware - print the PRINTER STATUS REPORT or PRINT QUALITY DIAGNOSTIC page to verify your firmware version.
2. To print the printer status report, on the printer control panel, press and hold the (Cancel) button for three seconds (i.e. 8100 models). Alternatively, you can print either of the reports from the TOOLS menu if this does work.....OR.......
3. Check 'Product Information' - 'Firmware Version'
a. CKP5CN1334ER for the HP Office jet Pro 8100 and 8600 printer series
b. If your printer has this printer firmware version, then you may be impacted.

If the error message persists then we suggest you return the cartridge(s) to your refiller and request to have the 'smart chip' (attached to cartridge) replaced with a new chip*. If Costco does not have the NEW CHIP VERSIONS yet, then request a refund for the refill purchase.

However, if the same problem occurs with a 2nd cartridge (or manufacturer's brand new ink cartridge) then the PRINTHEAD may either have ink on the internal electrical surfaces (where cartridge mates to it) or the PRINTHEAD may have a bent or deformed contact pin. Remove PRINTHEAD from printer and inspect for damage to contact pin(s) on the INSIDE OF THE PRINTHEAD ASSEMBLY. Refer to printhead removal procedure below for reference. Often, you can bend the pin back into position to correct the issue.

ADDITIONAL ERROR MESSAGES / NOTES:

2. An "Ink Cartridge Depleted" message can be observed (printer will cease print operations) when an ink cartridge 'really is' out of ink. HP has small sensors which look into the bottom of the ink tank to ensure ink is present. Typically you will receive 'Low Ink Warning' messages just before this occurs.

3. Since the printer monitors ink usage/drop counts, it will display the 'Ink Sensor Warning' messages when it 'predicts' the cartridge should be out of ink, but these messages can be temporarily ignored and you may continue printing. Eventually the 'Cartridge(s) Depleted' alert message will be displayed when the cartridge truly is out of ink.

4. The "Use Color Ink Only" or "Use Black Ink Only" messages can be caused by poor contact (i.e. electrical connectivity) between the ink cartridge's 'smart chip' and the carriage assembly (which the ink cartridge plugs into). Typically a 'Red X' will also be displayed on printer control panel LCD or Window's pop-up screen when this condition is present.


*This type of error may be caused an electrically damaged 'smart chip' which is affixed to the rear side of the cartridge itself, a mis-aligned chip (wrong position), an incorrect replacement chip type (i.e. operator installed the wrong chip on for that color and/or tank size). In most case the cartridge will need to have a new replacement chip installed. If your product has a removable printhead and uses 564, 364, 178, 862, or 920 cartridges, you have come to the right troubleshooting document.



Issue
An \'Ink System Failure\' or \'0x... \' error message displays on the printer control panel. The exact text of these error messages varies by printer, but they are usually preceded by the word \'Error .\'


The steps to resolve this issue depend on the error code that displays on the product control panel with the \'Ink System Failure\' message. Look for the section below that addresses your particular issue, and then review the solutions in that section.

Follow these steps to resolve the issue of \'Ink System Failure\' with an accompanying error code \'0xC19A0003.\'



Solution one: Reset the printer


The error message might disappear after you turn off the printer and then turn it on again. After you make any adjustments to the cartridges or the printhead, reset the printer in order for the error message to clear completely. Follow these steps to reset the printer.






  1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.



  2. With the product turned on , disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.


  3. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.


  4. Wait at least 15 seconds.


  5. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.


  6. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.


  7. If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button ( ) to turn it on.






  • If the error message disappears, the issue is resolved and you do not need to troubleshoot further.




  • If the error message persists, continue to the next solution.




Solution two: Remove, clean, and reinstall the printhead


If the previous solutions did not resolve the problem, the printhead might be installed incorrectly, or there might be ink or debris on the printhead electrical contacts. Follow these steps to check and clean the printhead.



Step one: Remove the printhead



  1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.



  2. Open the cartridge access door.


  3. To remove each cartridge, press the tab on the front of the cartridge to release it and remove it from the slot.

    NOTE: Do not leave the cartridges outside the product longer than 30 minutes. Doing so can result in damage to both the product and the cartridges.



  4. Lift the latch handle on the carriage until it stops.

  5. Lift the printhead straight up to remove it.

Step two: Clean the printhead
There are three areas of the printhead that need to be cleaned: the plastic ramps on both sides of the ink nozzles, the edge between the ink nozzles and the electrical contacts, and the electrical contacts. Follow these steps to clean the printhead.

CAUTION:Do not touch the ink nozzles. Do not touch the electrical contacts with your finger. Use only cleaning materials to touch the electrical contact areas.

  1. Gather the following cleaning materials:





    • Several clean, lint-free cloths or papers. Coffee filters and glass-cleaning cloths work well.






  2. Distilled or bottled water. Do not use tap water, because it can contain contaminants that can damage the printhead.




  • Lightly dampen a clean, lint-free cloth.


  • Use the damp cloth to wipe the electrical contacts from the bottom to the top. Do not go past the edge between the electrical contacts and the ink nozzles. Repeat this motion until no ink remains on the electrical contacts.

  • Use a fresh, lightly dampened, lint-free cloth to wipe any accumulated ink and debris from the edge between the ink nozzles and the electrical contacts.

  • Use a fresh, lightly dampened, lint-free cloth to wipe the plastic ramps on both sides of the ink nozzles. Wipe away from the nozzles only.

  • Dry the previously cleaned areas with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth before proceeding to the next step.


  • Lightly dampen a fresh, clean, lint-free cloth with bottled or distilled water.


  • Clean the electrical contacts inside the product by wiping them from top to bottom. Repeat this motion until no ink remains on the electrical contacts.

  • Dry the area with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth.



  • Step three: Reinstall the printhead



    1. Raise the latch handle, and then reinsert the printhead.

    2. Carefully lower the latch handle before reinserting the cartridges.



      NOTE:Leaving the latch handle raised can result in incorrectly seated cartridges and printing issues. The latch must remain down to install the cartridges correctly.

    3. Using the colored shaped icons for help, slide the cartridges into their appropriate slots until they snap firmly into place in the slot.

  • Close the cartridge access door.







    • If the error message disappears, the issue is resolved and you do not need to troubleshoot further.




    • If the error message persists, continue to the next solution.





    Solution three: Reset the product








    1. Press the Power button ( ) to turn on the product.



    2. With the product turned on , disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.


    3. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.


    4. Wait at least 15 seconds.


    5. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.

    Solution four: Replace the printhead


    If the previous solutions did not resolve the issue, replace the printhead. Contact HP support to obtain a replacement printhead.

    If HP replaces your printhead assembly under warranty, you will receive a new printhead assembly, cleaning materials, and a full set of new cartridges.


    If your printhead assembly is no longer under warranty, you can purchase a new one online.

    HP Officejet Pro K550 - Printhead Error Message on new printhead - cleaned printhead, contacts... tried all fixes... what now? Is it faulty?


    I have the same problem. I replaced both printhead cartidges. The MC light stopped blinking, but the KY light kept blinking. I thought it was a faulty new KY ink cartridge. So I returned that cartridge and got a new one. Still the same issue. I called hp and they said the print head is bad now and all they focused on was trying to sell me a new printer. UG! I also heard wiping off the printhead with a dry cloth may help. Did you get yours to wokr?

    "PrinterHeads" problem reported. So I replaced with brand new ones. Same Message. Call HP....the have me restart to make sure. Same Message. Then HP says it's junk...no fix. True?


    Unfortunately it is true. What happens if you get that error on one printhead and your replace the printhead and get the same error message... its the firmware in the printer that is bad. At that point if the printer is still under warranty the unit would be replaced along with the printheads. If not then unfortunately you would be looking at getting a new printer

    Will not print, red light blinks under the paper symbol


    Hello,

    It means it has "paper jam"error message. This is a common issue w/ the ESP printers of Kodak especially if its brand new.


    Try the steps below.


    1.Open the printer access door.
    2.Remove the black and color ink cartridges.
    3.Reseat the printhead.

    a. Lift the printhead release latch
    b. Reseat the printhead, pushing firmly on the white label on the printhead (if provided) or the center of the printhead, until it clicks into place.

    4. Close the access door.
    5. wait for the printer to initialize.

    If issue persists, the printer itself needs to be replaced. Call 1.800.421.6699

    Officejet Pro L7590 printhead message (printheads only 2m. old)!


    Pull out the printhead from the computer and check the date under "warranty ends" If the warranty period did not lapse, call HP technical support and tell them about the problem. They will replace the printhead for free. I have gone through 3 black/yellow printheads and I received the replacement printheads via FedEx within 1-2 days. They will send you a pre-paid envelope to return via U.S. Postal Service via US Postal Service.

    If the Warranty date on the printhead expired, then you may have to come out of pocket to replace the printhead since HP will argue that they are not obligated to replace the printhead since the manufacturer warranty lapsed.

    If this is the case, check to see when you purchased the printer. If the purchase was within a year, the retailer (i.e. Best Buy) is on the hook since there is a 1 year implied warranty on products such as printers, regardless of whether the expiration date on the HP printhead expired.

    Brand New but does not work


    If it is truly a brand new printer, call the place of business where you purchased it and give them the error message. They will take it back as warranty and get you a new one. Either the printhead is bad, or there is a problem with the MLB.

    Print head problem


    Dear palia1234,
    Blinking in orange 5 times indicates that the printhead error occurs. You need to replace the printhead with a new one. But be careful before replacing the printhead, check your printhead if any smoke smell or indication of short circuitry present. Replacing the printhead in this case will harm new printhead. You'd better to take your printer to the nearest service center.
