Before buying one, call Apple (1-800-My-Apple) I just got my screen on my iMac (out of warranty and about the same vintage) replaced for free. There is a Special Warranty for this problem. It my not be the same for yours, but try.

I have a gray bar on the left side of my screen on my desk top that I cannot remove to get a full screen. Help.

Hello. That problem can be hardware, such as a faulty mother board (the video card is part of the mother board on the iMacs). This also depends ont the iMac model that you have. If it is a G5, there was a series problem with condensers on the motherboard, but it is now too late to claim a replacement. If it is a newer iMac with intel chip, I would advise to bring the Mac to an AppleStore near your place or a repair shop for a complete diagnostic.

I think that on an iMac, this kind of problem can't be software related, because it is an all-in-one desktop with no separated screen settings.

Hope that helps

If someone has looked at this issue and determined it to be a logic board problem then the only solution is to replace the entire logic board.

You can purchase them on usedmac.com here for $289:

Here are instructions on replacing the logic board yourself:

I have an iMac G5, system 10.4, that gives me a white screen with the apple logo and lots of fan noise when I try to boot up. What's going on?

It is having difficulty with the system folder, try starting with the left hand shift key held down, if not boot from CD, select language as if you are going to do an install, on the next screen the top menu has a utilities folder, in this select disc utlility, select your hard drive and then select repair, let this work and if OK or repaired (if it says it cannot repair then you need a repair utlity like DiskWarrior) then repair permissions, this can take a while with a big HD, then in utilities select start up disk and select your HD and restart.

The gray wire is one of the antennae leads to the wireless card on the motherboard. The other lead is either white or black. Or the card may have three leads for the "N" speed. Wireless cards have white, black and gray wires for the antennae.

Apple imac HDD install

Pretty sure any size, but they use 3.5" SATA drives, not 2.5 laptop drives. iMacs only use desktop drives so get as big as you want, or can afford with a big cache. The 17 imacs are hard to get into so search the internet on how to get in and replace it and to put the heat shield back in right. Be careful not to break the clips.

White bar on right side of screen

Try a reboot. If it remains, shut down and leave off for about an hour. If it comes back you probably have a problem with your video card. You can have it replaced (it will be pricey though), or consider getting a new computer. I had a similar issue with an Intel iMac 24-inch out of warranty and had the card replaced but your machine is much older.

Possibly, the newer G5 Imacs feature Intel 2 Core Duo Processers. While older generations, do not support Intel Core Duo or Intel 2 Core Duo Processers.
