Question about JVC Audio Players & Recorders
I would first suspect the volume control potentiometer, but I don't understand why it only turns down, and especially how it gets turned up in order to be turned down. You will have to measure the potentiometer while turning it up, and see if the meter jumps to a high resistance. If it does, it's bad and should be replaced. If it doesn't, the unit will have to be troubleshot with a signal generator and oscilloscope.
You can try to spray some electrical contact cleaner and try to restore it's operation. Aside from that, the unit will need servicing.
