Saturn CD Changer

By Rachel007 - usenet poster

For those of you who purchased the CD changer, how much was it as a dealer
installed option? Is it available as a user installed option? From what
I've read it seems that a wiring harness is only included with certain radio
options. I was considering the upgraded AM/FM/cassette with EQ and the
changer.. But I'm not sure how much the changer option is...

Don't have exact figures, but I think the dealer wanted about $660 for it.

Sure is. I called around -- changer cost me about $510 from a Saturn dealer.

For '97 and earlier (don't know how much earlier though) if you had a graphic
equalizer, you could add the changer -- the wiring was in the car.

For '98, if you have a graphic eq and a tape deck in the front, the wiring is
there. Rumor has it that if you have the graphic eq and the single CD player
up front, you don't get the cable running to the CD changer.

If you're buying, make SURE that there is a connector in the top middle of the
trunk. That's the connector that attaches to the CD changer.

I bought the car w/o the changer and then called around the dealers to get the
best price on the changer. Bought it myself, installed it myself. It's easy,
but you need a set of TORX drivers for some of the screws.

I paid $500 for mine. (without installation). Some dealer will only
offer it as installed option, but it is about $600 for Saturn of Marietta.
And I don't think the $100 is worth it. I know that you can get it for
$450-$480 if you shop around. It is a very easy job. You can do it in 10
minutes if you are a handy man. Wiring harness is included with upgraded
cassetee. But I am sure that you request it if you really want. Also,
make sure that you have "AX" button, that is the button that turns on the
CD-changer.

Hope that helps.

I paid $510 plus 80 bucks installation.. The cable on a 98 model only comes
with the factory ordered premium cassette and doesnt come with the premium cd
player.. Mine was ordered with the cd player up front and the interface cable
wasnt installed. If it was I would have put the unit in myself.. Make sure you
order the premium cassette/eq package first... Richy

I got the CD changer as a user installed option and it was, get ready and brace
yourself, $515.00! I saved because there was no labor to install it. If you
have the AM/FM cassette and EQ (with the AX button) AND the CD wiring harness
all you have to do is mount the bracket, put the changer in it and plug the cable
into it. No drilling no cutting and a minimum of tools. You also get a choice
of placing the changer facing forward or rearward.

Delco is the supplier for Rockford Fosgate. Page 7 of the 1996 Hughes
Electronics Corporation (Delco Holding Company at the time) states:
"Rockford Fosgate's radios are supplied by DE (Delco Electronics).
These high-performance auto sound systems are available to consumers
through independent and regional distributors."

Oh, I've confirmed that the magazine that the Saturn CD changer uses is
the Pioneer JD-T1212. This makes a strong case for the changer itself
being built by Pioneer in Japan.

More useless trivia...

Funny, in the past I remember the CD changer actually saying Saturn on it. The one
I put in today boldly says Delco Electronics.

I have to say, for $375 you could replace the head unit
and get a 12-disc changer *no problem* and probably
have a better sounding system. $150 or so for a Pioneer
KEH-P4600 and $230 for a Pioneer 12-disc changer. I
am sure other mfg's have similar prices, but I'm
familiar with Pioneer pricing, so that's why I use it.
You would need a $20 mounting kit and harness, but
install is a snap.
