Question about Texas Instruments TI-89 Calculator

1 Answer

I have not used the calculator over the summer and just recently I turned it on to see if it was working. It turned on fine, but none of the other buttons work. I can't get it to turn off or do anything except for turn on. The batteries are all fine.

May I assume the battery contacts are also fine?

You can try resetting the calculator. Press and hold the 2ND, left-arrow, and right-arrow keys, then press and release the ON key. Does that do anything?

It won't turn on. I've put new batteries in 4months ago and it worked fine. And when school was over, I didn't used it all summer. But now when a new semister started, I needed to use my Calculator again...

TI calculators have an annoying habit of dimming the screen when the batteries are changed so that it appears as if the calculator isn't turning on. Turn the calculator on (or at least press the ON key). Press and release the 2ND key. Press and hold the Up-arrow key for a few seconds and see whether the screen becomes legible.

If this doesn't do it, please append a comment to this post and we'll go on from there.

Many TI calculators have an annoying habit of dimming the screen when the batteries are changed so that it appears as if the calculator isn't turning on at all. Turn the calculator on (or at least press the ON key). Press and release the 2ND key. Press and hold the Up-arrow key for a few seconds and see whether the screen becomes legible.

TI-83 Plus Problem

Batteries:
Make sure to replace the "battery backup" too the little lithium ion battery

Try Adjusting contrast:
Hold down "[2nd]" key press up or down arrow repeatedly to lighten or darken contrast.

First attempt reseting:
Step 1: Remove all the batteries
Step 2: Hold "Clear" key down
Step 3: Still holding "Clear" key reinstall batteries
Step 4: Still holding "Clear" key press "On" key until home screen is displayed.

Second shot reseting:
remove all batteries including lithium ion (backup battery), wait 3 hours and reinstall batteries.

Third Shot reseting:
Step 1: Remove a battery
Step 2: Hold down "DEL" key reinstall battery
Step 3: Possible msg pops up saying "Waiting ... Please install software" IGNORE msg and take out battery again
Step 4: Reinstall battery do not hold down "DEL" key

reseting will cause the handheld to loose all of its stored memory.

Hope that helps!

My TI has a graphical problem

There could be a few solutions. First check if your OS is the same as your friend's. You can check this by [2nd][+] About. It is in the second row. If they aren't, don't worry. Second, you could have a corrupt copy caused by transfer. Delete your file and have your friend send a new copy. Third, delete the file and use a different link cable. If none of those work, delete the file and download it directly from the computer. I had three-hundred games on my calculator at one point so I have dealt with this many times. Good luck!
