Question about Televison & Video

Samsung DLP model hln5065w My problem sounds similar to many I've read about here. TV makes a high pitched whine, unlike the noise emitted from a defective color wheel. The lamp will not light. The TV will attempt to cycle on and off several times before giving up and flashing all three lights on the front of the set. I replaced the color wheel, lamp, and ballast. No change. I insured the rear detector switch was properly depressed, and even jumped it once to be sure. No change. Also, if I plug and unplug about 10 times, the tv will come on. The picture is dim with verticle lines running across the front (IIIII IIIII IIIII IIII). Help!!!

This may be beyond my real of expertise. In the past, I've easilly replaced simple components with good results. This level of testing seem somewhat more complex. Is there perhaps a "gremlin" in these components that is likely the source of the problem. The television was play properly and then suddenly began the problem I've described

I was told to check voltages across the power supply to narrow down the problematic components. I was hoping the described problem could be more simply traced to a specific part. Any direction would be appreciated.

Thank you very much Ladywinn! I checked the power supply board, and nothing seemed amiss. I'm beginning to wonder whether it's worth the trouble to continue buying parts for this television when the prices of new ones are in range of the money I've been spending. I think it's now me versus the machine :) Where do you think I should look next?

The lines are caused by the image processor that can't read the memory buffer because it's undervolted - something is wrong in the power source.
The whine is caused by the power source that is overstressed by a short. Take a look at it, especially at the capacitors. Disconnect everything attached to it and test the output voltages, they will give you a clear indication on where is the faulty part located.

From what you describe a component just failed. The only thing you will be able to do is to look very carefully for damaged parts: bulging capacitors, burned resistors, or bad deformed transistors and replace them all.

I have Samsung DLP TV 50 inch HL-P5063W

First thing to look at is the color wheel this model uses--usually it will make a high pitched fan like sound but can make a grinding sound also.

If it slows down from the 12,000 or so RPM speed it will cause color issues.

HAVE GRINDING OR HIGH PITCHED SOUND?

Samsung DLP TV repair or replace that is the question!

Color wheel sounds like it needs replacement. The set will often shut down when the color wheel gets bad and wont power up.

I have a Samsung DLPTV, picture is fine. There is a "whining" noise associated with the TV the whole time its on. Stops as TV shuts down, It's about 4 years old and have not replaced lamp. Could this be...

Google your model number; I suspect it is a bad color wheel--lots of these sets have a fan like noise or even a grinding sound sometimes called a high pitched whine.

The part can be customer replaceable and YOUTube has actual video instructions for its replacement.

My Samsung DLP is making a loud humming noise

Most likely if you are hearing a fan like noise from this DLP it is not the fan.

These sets use a replaceable color wheel that before it fails makes either a high pitched whine or a fan like sound.

Part is usually customer replaceable and there are free written instructions and video instructions on YouTube for most models.

Samsung HLN5065W 50 in. Rear Projection HDTV-Ready

With the back off of the set it will shut off. There is a lever it engages to prevent the set being operated with the back off.

The color Wheel will cause a fan like or high pitched grinding noise. I can tell you where to buy it and also there are on the internet places with written and VIDEO instructions for the replacement in most of these sets.

Put the back on and see if the set again works and still has the noise.

Samsung DLP Model HLP 4663 WX Constant Whining

What you're hearing is the most likely the color wheel if you remove the lamp you can see part of it ...a multicolored plastic disk.It rotates on a high speed motor and make an awful whining noise when it fails.

High pitched whine when the motor starts

Had the same problem. It quit within about 5 seconds after turning the TV off. Replaced the color wheel and the whine is gone. The picture also looks brighter, which may be due to dusting the projection lens with lens-cleaning compressed air (from a can). The color wheel was about $100 from Samsung parts and it took less than 3 hours to replace. See http://www.jangro.com/a/2006/07/24/samsung-dlp-replace-color-wheel/ for good info, and be sure to read the cautions.
