Question about Frigidaire GLTF2070DS Front Load Washer

1 Answer

GLTF2070DS Gallery Serice Front Load Washer - Frigidaire. Seem the tub is off/mis-aligned from the front boot (black seal). When the tub spins it makes a thumping sound on each rotation. I opened up the front and back panels and the shocks and spring are all intact. Tried to re-align the tub and boot by without success.

Thank you for the reply and information. Just to confirm your diagnosis, when I grab hold of the rim there is substantial play within the basket. The back planel is removed and when the tub is spun, there is a thumping sound on each revolution. I do not see any broken or worm parts outside of the drum and it appears to me that all of the problems are inside the drum.

Can you comment on the above.

    Thanks,

    john

Hello,

Welcome to FixYa.

Based on your description my first suspicion would be a worn tub bearing.

The other possibilities could have been the suspension shock absorbers or springs but you ruled that out.

If they are intact, good...but bad.

The tub bearing is as I alluded to likely worn, or the inner tub has broken apart.

You can check this by way of opening the door and grabbing the inner basket rim and moving up and down to feel for play...there should be zero play or zero tolerance in this bearing.

You can also remove the rear panel and visually inspect it as well. First, look for signs of leakage around the center bearing.

Second, grab the large pulley and try and move it back and forth or spin it with the belt off to listen for a grinding noise.

If it is indeed worn it will require practically the complete tub assembly ( rear wall with bearing and inner basket )...that is the least expensive and easiest fix at around $400 for the entire assembly.

example...

You can opt to change just the rear wall and bearing with the basket in separate pieces, but it comes in around $370 and still leaves you with pulling the old one apart to re-use the front shell.

Either way this is a fairly involved repair and even for an experienced tech like myself can take 60 - 90mins. I'd guess it would take one who's never done it all day.

Let me know what you find and I'll do what I can to assist you.

Good luck. Thank you for choosing FixYa.

Regards,

Macmarkus :)

    Hey John,

Sure I can comment on what you are finding and what I`m talking about.

The inner basket on the frigidaire made front load washer is actually in two pieces from the manufacturer, the stainless steel basket seen here...

Is actually held in place via the "spider and shaft" assembly as shown here...

When replacing it comes as a separate unit or the complete tub as I alluded to before.

The problem is typically either the rear bearing which this shaft ( first picture shows it better ) rides in, wears out...or the spider breaks from the basket.

Either way and it`s pretty much a case for replacing the entire assembly due to the cost involved.

You can check around. The basket is part #131618500 and retails between $200us at Sears and $325us at Repair Clinic respectively.

The complete assembly however, goes for about $410us at Sears and $555us at Repair Clinic. but you get everything, i.e.

It is a fairly involved repair no matter which way you go, but I think anyone with some mechanical reasoning and skills can do it with setting aside a day/afternoon with relative ease.

One must also consider the condition of the entire machine of course and the cost to replace the washer with a new one as well, but I`ll leave this info with you and hopefully it helps in either matter.

Let me know if any of this isn`t clear and I`ll try to explain.

I`m currently working on a step by step "repair tip" on replacing the entire assembly as I`m finding I presently repair 2-3 a month plus many more inquiries everyday here on FixYa.

    Regards,

    Macmarkus :)

Leaking from the bottom of the washer.

it sounds as if the main tub ring is bad you need to pull your agitator out and check the two blots that hold the tub to the shaft and make sure they have not become loose or broken causing the inner tub to drop on the shaft and tear the tub seal.

If it's not the door-lock switch, you need a new speed control board.

Leaks water

Okay, to check for your source of a leak, start by removing the 2 screws on the lower front panel of the machine. This will let you see inside. As you are running the washer, watch where the water is coming from. If from the front, you may have a hole in your boot (the black rubber up front) If so, you may need to replace the boot (the part comes with step by step instructions). If coming from the middle, your tub seal may be going bad. A quick fix is tighten the 12 or 14 bolts that go all of the way around your tub. This will only be a temporary measure. The tub will have to be taken apart and the seal replaced. (this is a 1 1/2 hour - 2 hour procedure for 2 technicians) If it leaking from the rear, you may have a bad tub bearing. You can remove the back panel to be certain, but usually a bad bearing will be accompanied by a roaring noise durring the spin cycle. As for the dryer leaving brown marks? Usually the front seal has been dammaged. Run your finger around the front of the drum (where it meets the front panel) the gap should be about the same all of the way around. If it is not, you may need a new front seal. (this is much cheaper and less time consuming on the dryer compared to a seal on the washer)

Black streaks, smudges and dots from drum

take a rag and wipe around front door boot first does any thing come off on rag if this ckd ok does it keep a roaring noise when spinning? if so suspect rear bearing or corrision on spider this is tub support behind basket..ask for estimate before repair as this could result in major expense to repair good luck

Front Loading Washer LOUD NOISE

IF IT ROARS LIKE A JET PLANE TAKING OFF, THE SPIN BEARING IS FAILING. PROBABLY, THE REAR SEAL HAS FAILED ALLOWING WATER TO GET INTO THE BEARING.
THE BEARING HAS LOST ITS LUBRICATION SO IT IS GETTING DRY. IT WILL CONTINUE TO GET LOUDER AND LOUDER THE LONGER REPAIRS ARE PUT OFF.
THE ENTIRE BACK HALF OF THE OUTER TUB WILL HAVE TO BE REPLACED. THE BEARING IS PART OF THAT ASSEMBLY. CAN BE A COSTLY REPAIR.
