Something you may want to check is to see if there is a "governor" for the 2nd gear. My 4 year old has a 4x4 similiar to this and the only two gears that worked were 1st & reverse until my husband had to unscrew a piece from the 2nd gear setting..check the manual or if you don't have one, look online through the manufacturers website. I hope this helps!

SOURCE: !st gear won't work
I would replace the shifter assembly. It seems to be a better upgrade with the switches built into the shifter itself. It also has the wiring with it.
As long as the battery seems to work and the motors are going in one of the speeds, then there is not much to the vehicle.
It is a specific Peg Perego Switch assembly.
Hope this helps

I am experiencing the same issue with my sons gator. He was riding it, stopped to look at something, then when he got back in, 1st and reverse no longer worked. I replaced the shifter switch and have the same issue. It was suggested that the switch was reversed, but it only installs one way. I have yet to solve this. Please, if anyone has any better information, please let me know.

I would replace the high/low switch and the reverse switch. One time a replaced the high/low switch and the reverse switch quit on me 2 weeks later.
You can also get the Peg Perego Gator Shifter that upgrades the vehicle.

If it is new, contact Peg Perego for a replacement. If it is not new, you can upgrade the shifter to a better version. (I just upgraded the one on my kids' gator.) You can buy the upgraded shifter for $24. http://tigerimports.net/sunshop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=7095
