What is the error message or sympton? Did you check the inside of the chassis and see whether the cable connection between the power button and the motherboard is still there? Power supply still working? Fans on it turning? Fans on the motherboard is turnning? Replace with new components to see whether that fixs it.

I have a gateway performance 1400 desktop. Got it 10 years ago. has a 20GB hard drive. bought a western digital WD800BB 80 GB hard drive. installed it into system and it is not recognized. I think I need...

Hello
I dont think you need a bios update. The new drive.. is it set as a master? There should be a small jumper in the back. Master . Slave. Auto. Set the jumper to master.

Next.Take a good look at the ribbon cord and be sure its installed correctly on the back of the drive and on the motherboard.

Last.. reset the bios by using the jumper to clear c mos on the motherboard.

Installed 1gig rdram computer wont turn on , only orange light... when i took out 512mb and put back the 256mb + 512mb(upgrade) it works.. but how do i install the other 512mb with out it not working......

Hi. It is recommended that you use a balanced memory total. Just like the wheels of the car. They all must be of the same capacity. But what you can try to swap the locations of where you put the cards in. If you still have problems then just use the 2 pieces of 512mb. Cheers!

When im on the computer the monitor shuts off a box appears saying power saving enabling monitor to shut down in a few seconds and then it restarts

Windows provides the following plans to help you manage your computer's power:

  • Balanced. Offers full performance when you need it and saves power during periods of inactivity. This is the best power plan for most people.

  • Power saver. Saves power by reducing system performance and screen brightness. This plan can help laptop users get the most from a single battery charge.

  • High performance. Maximizes screen brightness and might increase the computer's performance in some circumstances. This plan uses a lot more energy and will reduce the amount of time that a laptop battery lasts between charges.
    Note

    • High performance doesn't appear on the battery meter by default. To turn on High performance, open Power Options by clicking the Start button ?id=4f6cbd09-148c-4dd8-b1f2-48f232a2fd33, and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type power options, and then click Power Options. Under Select a power plan, click Show additional plans, and then click High performance.

If these plans don't suit your needs, you can create your own power plan, using one of these plans as a starting point.

We have a gateway laptop model 7405gx and the battery light is blinking even though it is plugged in. Do we need a new battery? What kind is it? thanks. Judy

Does it still work fine on battery?
If you remove the power lead when the battery is in does it shut down.
If so the batery is probably gone.
Replacement bateries are expensive £77 here

Gateway lapton very slow and can't dowload anything?

Download " Getright" using www.google.com search
(we have used it it 99% good)
and install it .....may be it will help you in saving the download files....
about slowing ........
beforee doing close all applications
press ctrl+alt+del once and check for the performance tab
dont touch the keyboard and mouse

now your CPU should be using 2% approx (will be OK but not more if more bad)
and the PF usage should be approx 300 to 450 for Best performance mabe little more +50 will be OK but not more .(the lesser the PF usage the better the performance )
(so for getting the best performance in the system unistall all un wanted software's )

regards
let me know

My gateway performance 1400 display freezes up and neither the keyboard nor moue will repsond. This happens at varying times during boot up. after the freeze up i try to reboot and nothing displays.

This sounds like it maybe a virus that takes over the computers control panel and disables the keyboard and mouse so you can't clean your system.

Try booting into safe mode and see if the same thing happens. If you can run scans with AVG, Malwarebytes and Spybot. All of which can be downloaded for free from "download dot com"
