Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

My LG fridge has stopped being cold, for the last 2 days the fan has been making a strange noise, when I looked I saw some ice around the air flow vent so i chipped it away but now it's not working at all. Is the fan motor gone? The fridge is only a couple of years old.

Fridge too warm: makes ice, does'nt dispense it: dispenses water warm

I know that it is new but this might be your problem

My fridge is running but not cold enough: Start out with the easy stuff first...make sure the lights go out when you close the door(s), make sure the doors are closing properly and the gaskets are closing fully and not torn. Check to make sure the evaporator fan in the freezer is working, this fan blows the cold air around. If the fan is not working, possible bad fan motor - check for power to the fan motor and also check the fan switches around the door openings, ( if your fridge has these switches, not all do ). A common problem cropping up in the last several years has been the air damper not opening up and allowing the cold air from the freezer to be blown into the fresh food section ( mostly on SxS refrigerators ). For many years the air damper was manually operated and now we have motorized controlled or temperature controlled or thermister and electronic boards controlling air dampers, and if this device sticks closed the FF section will normally warm up. An example picture of "one" style and an air damper ( called a diffuser by Whirlpool ). Next would be to check the condenser tubing, a good place to start is to make sure the condenser coils are not built up with dust!! Make sure the condenser fan motor is also working properly. Check for any "clicking on and off" noises from the compressor, is the compressor running.

The most common fridge "not cooling" problem is a frost free failure. Remove the access panel in the freezer section to expose the evaporator coils. If the coils in the freezer section get plugged up with frost, this frost will block the evaporator fan motor from blowing the cold air around. The fan blade can also hit this frost and either become noisy or stop altogether. Locating the defrost timer can be tricky....they are often hidden behind the back bottom corners of the fridge at the bottom, in the last few years the timers have been located in the ceiling of the fresh food section, and some behind the cold control cover. Once you locate the defrost timer, slowly turn the screw like wheel in the middle of the defrost timer with a straight screwdriver until the fridge shuts off. You are now in defrost. If the defrost heater(s) comes on now, replace the defrost timer and defrost thermostat. If the heater(s) does not come on, you can ohm test the defrost heater for continuity or volt test for 120 volts to the heater(s). If you have no power to the defrost heater(s) you can also bypass the defrost thermostat to see if the defrost heater will come on, join the 2 wires together to bypass the defrost thermostat. If the heater now comes on, replace the defrost timer and defrost thermostat. If the heater itself is bad, defrost the fridge with a hair dryer, replace the defrost heater* and defrost thermostat. If the defrost timer seems "hot" to the touch or is noisy ( like a ticking or screeching noise )...replace it.

Since it is new, you should have a warranty and I would see if a repairman can check it free of charge before attempting anything, I don't know your skill level with this type of machine but good luck and don't forget to rate this post, Have a Great Day!

LG french door fridge - makes hideous noise - loose bearings? - whenever fan is running, which is several times an hour. Any idea what is causing it? Husband tried to grease the fan. It's really...

A broken fan blade can cause a noisy motor. or a buildup of ice can cause some noise. If thes aren't the case you will need to have the fan motor replaced.

Need to defrost fridge completely for about a day then switch on again. Possibly door was left ajar on freezer, or auger motor iced up due to product being to close to outlet..

Refrigerator wont get cold?

Make sure that the air flow from the fan in the freezer is getting to the fridge side. Sometimes even too many items around the vent will restrict air flow.

Strange noise when doors are closed

Is it the Kenmore French Door model made by by LG?  I have the similar LG refrigerator since 2/2007 and have had several problems with it.  The sound you hear may be  a fan motor that is failing or freezing up.  The noise will stop when you open the doors because that shuts off the fan motors. In the last two years I have had the refrigerator fan, the air channel duct, the mother board, the ice maker fan, the ice maker duct and the mother board (again) replaced (under warranty, fortunately).  After the first service call I installed a power surge protector since a component on the mother board was fried.  I think the second mother board replacement was due to a software change related to the ice maker issue.  There is also a case related to LG Energy Star ratings (that includes the Kenmore made by LG) that you can register for that is supposed to make free modifications and an ongoing rebate payment for as long as you own the refrigerator.  I found an LG service manual PDF on line (search by model number) that has diagnostic codes and test procedures that is very helpful when I need to troubleshoot and communicate with the repair shop.

The refrigerator is not cold inside.

Do you have an error code? More than likely you have a ER FF or 6,7. The problem is you have a build up of ice that is blocking your fan. The noise was the fan hitting the ice and the ice has no blocked it completely. Defrost your unit and remove the back panel on the freezer wall. Cut off a bit of the insulation as in the picture and you should be ok. The problem will not happen again if you do this.

Freezer works fine refridgerator does not

problem may be that the return vent from freezer to fridge is blocked with ice. best solution is to switch off for 24 hours with doors open. 2 hours may not be long enough to clear this blockage

Noise from Deodorizer

Sounds like the circ. fan may be hitting something or has a blade broken off. The refer gets cool air from the freezer section to cool it so the fan aids in the circulation along with vents/dampers, etc. to move air into the refer compartment. If that fan is broken off the motor shaft or something then the motor can run but no air will move. See if you can feel air moving out of the vents, it will be a little bit of "blowing" not a huge wind. A wet hand can help feel for wind. I believe the deodor light may indicate a change is needed (but check the owners manual for actual meaning). If there is no air flow open the freezer section and see if the air flow is noticed then... if a air channel if frozen and can't draw air from the proper area, opening the freezer door will give it outside air and you may feel flow then, that would tell you of a frozen air channel issue.
