The Canon support site is the place to go for that if your Manual does not tell you.
However remove the software and reload it - it may be as simple as that.

Check the lock switch and make sure it is unlocked. I think the lock switch is on the bottom...or it may be under the lid near one of the hinges. Flip it back and forth and leave it in the unlocked position.
If this doesn't work, then it will most likely need service. Contact Canon Tech Support.

SOURCE: problems in using it
I ran into a similar problem with my LiDE 20 right after I upgraded my Adobe Reader from version 8.0 to version 9.0. Under the "Link scanned images to" section, the path was still pointing to the old version of Adobe Reader. To fix it, I clicked the "Set..." button and selected the appropriate path to the new version of Adobe Reader. You can also try clicking the "Link Deletion" button if you just want the file to be saved without displaying the image after scanning.

Had same problem with mac os 10.4 solution was downloading the latest epson driver from epson it still didn't work. turned out that the "epson perfection 1670.ds " old file was in the trash and the scanner was still using it. I turned off the scanner, rebooted the mac and "empty trash". Turned scanner back on and it worked. If you still have the problem make sure that you only have on "epson perfection 1670.ds" file in your HD,library, image capture, twain data sources.

"Link Scanned images to..." refers to the programme you want to open the file. Navigate to the .exe of your preferred viewer
