SOURCE: Mybook essential
Hi guys...
I had kind of the same problem like u...when i plugged it into the usb all i got was a "unknown usb device found"
I opened the external case hoping the hdd was still ok only to find out that the hdd cables had been moved slightly out of position..propably from a fall or a knock I didn't even noticed..
I just pressed them back in..click..and everything was back to normal..
These sites have info about how to open the external case..

I uninstalled the drive, rolled back xp to pre install. Updated my bios (ASUS m2npv-vm motherboard). reconnected using firewire again and now it works ok. On the 1st install I changed the drive mapping as soon as I had connected. this time I left it, rebooted and once it was working then I changed the drive mapping. Now it works fine.

I understand your pain. Mine was always slow, but it's by design. I am sure the limitation is the amount of RAM it has, because everytime it needs to access data, the RAM is so small that it will have to go back to the drive just to re-read an index. When mine died after 1.5 yrs, I took it apart and found a WD5000AAKS SATA 7200rpm drive. Performance of the drive should be excellent, but in that little plastic box that is acting like a stand-alone NT server, performance is s-l-o-w. As a MyBook, it's best used as a backup unit, but be sure you have a backup of that, since it is highly unlikely it will live much more than 12 months, if that, because it has no forced cooling. See other issues on this site with regard to other MyBooks.

Yes, this can be done via the user web interface, by typing in mybookworld or wdstorage into the web browser and the shared storage manager should come up. If you go to general setup there should be an option to update network settings.
