Question about DeLonghi DE500P Dehumidifier

1 Answer

Unit and Pump will not start when buttons are depressed. The only feature that works is raise and lower humidity levels. I have tried removing the plug to reset the processor to no avail.

Has this unit ever worked correctly? How old is the unit? Please give me a little more info here so I can help you out further. Also, is the DE500P the correct model number?

Yikes, that's as I feared. It sounds like the pump may have actually failed in the surge. This is sadly very common for these DeLonghi units. I recommend if you keep it you get a surge supressor between the unit and the wall plug to protect against this kind of thing. It will need some fairly serious repairs. You will now need to call DeLonghi to find out where you can get it done:

I am so sorry about that :(

Fan always runs, speed doesnt change (low/high), setting humidity level doesnt impact...is this a control board or circuit board issue?

Verify the humidity reading with another device. Perhaps the humidity sensor is dirty or bad.

Another possibility is the switching device that runs the compressor and fan is shorted. If it's a mechanical relay, the contacts may have welded together, or if it's a solid-state relay, it's got a punch-through or meltdown in a device junction. My guess is it's a mechanical relay since you mention it used to click on and off and now you don't hear that. The relay may be on the control board, or it may be mounted separately - I don't have a photo or diagram of the inside of your model available.

What is a good number setting to set dehumidifier on this spring? Higher number or lower?

You can start at a lower number, and then increase it as the season progresses and gets more humid. One way to adjust is use an inexpensive humidity meter to see how well the unit is working and maintaining your desired level. Many thermometers have a humidity meter included with them. When the meter shows humidity is increasing, you can raise the setting as needed.

My Haier DE45EAL is difficult to adjust the Humidity How do I do it?

The arrow down button lowers the humidity level to what you want to extract and maintain. The higher settings remove little to know humidity and maintains a higher humidity level.

If you're trying to extract a lot of humidity/condensation, lower it to 35%.

The unit runs but no water is collected. i tried the reset button to see if that would help. any solutions?

There are 5 basic, yet solvable reasons for what you described. Please pay particular attention to numbers 1& 2..

1. The humidity extraction level is set to HIGH. Lower it to 32-35%. If you have a analog unit
(No LED Screen) set the humidity extraction knob on Maximum.

2. Air intake filter is dirty or clogged. Turn unit OFF, & Unplug the
Unit, before removing to inspect & clean it, if necessary. If washed,
allow filter to completely dry before reinstalling. DO NOT operate
the unit without the filter.

3. Obstructed air flow. Maintain a minimum of 12 to 18" of clear air
space around the entire unit.

4. Cooling coils are dirty and need to be cleaned. Use warm water & dish washing liquid to
clean the coils. Rinse and wipe dry. Apply a light coating of WD40 to the coils.

5. Ambient air temperature at floor level is between 40 - 60 degrees.
dehumidifiers do not work well between those temperatures
(Unless, you have a Low Temp Unit). This applies mainly to
where the air temperature at floor level is colder than at shoulder level
in basement applications . Raising the unit up off the floor,
onto a sturdy table, counter top, etc, that can handle the weight
of the unit, plus a full tank of water, will usually resolve this
problem.

If none of the above solves the problem, it may be a case of the compressor needs to be recharged with refrigerant gas or that the humidity condenser sensor has failed. These things usually occur in units that are 5 years old or older. It's rare in a unit younger than that. But, it can happen.

I hope this info will help you to troubleshoot & solve the problem. Thanks for choosing FixYa.

What do the control knob numbers mean. Does the lower the number mean less humidity?

If you have an analog unit the humidity extraction knob should be turned to Maximum.

If you have an LED screen, the arrow down button is what determines the amount of humidity to be removed and maintained. In this case, the lower the number does mean less humidity.

On an analog unit, it's the higher numbers that determine the lower humidity levels.

I hope this helps you and thanks for choosing FixYa.

Unit no longer removes water/humidity from air. The filter had been extremly clogged up (now clean) but is fan suppossed to move when it's running ? If so - is it electric or belt driven ? Is...

Well, we know the filter was playing a role in it.. Good job on cleaning that. Depending on where you have the humidity extraction level set, the fan could run all the time (It's direct drive. No belt). I suspect if you lower the humidity extraction level to 35%, you will see/hear water collecting in the bucket after about 30 minutes to an hour of operation.

Also, maintain at least 18" of clear air space around the entire unit.

In addition, if you're using this in a basement Ambient air temperature at floor level is between 40 - 60 degrees. dehumidifiers do not work well between those temperatures Unless, you have a Low Temp Unit). This applies mainly to where the air temperature at floor level is colder than at shoulder level
in basement applications . Raising the unit up off the floor, onto a sturdy table, counter top, etc, that can handle the weight of the unit, plus a full tank of water, will usually resolve this problem.

Hope this helped you to further troubleshoot and solve the problem. Please let me know.

I cannot change the set point on my humidity control. It is at 70%. If I press the up arrow i get 2 beeps and no change. When I press the down arrow there is no response at all. Is there some sort of...

The problem is, your trying to raise the humidity level, not lowering. These work in reverse of what you may think. Lower the level (Arrow Down) to 32% and it will continue to run, but will draw more humidity out of the air and will not stop until the water collection bucket is full or the humidity level reaches 32% or you turn it OFF.

When you pushed the Arrow Up Button, it was already on 70%, that's as high as it will go. But that means, you're trying to maintain a 70% humidity level. If it's Summer where you are, I don't think that's what you want.

Hope this helped you. Please let me know. Thanks.

My machine is running but no water is being collected. The model number on my machine says DE N 500 P

Several things can cause your problem:

Dirty or clogged air intake filter. Remove and clean the filter according to the Owner's Manual instructions.

Dirty coolant coils. Clean and dry the coolant coils.

The humidity extraction level is set to high. Lower the level to 35%

Not enough free air space around the unit. Maintain at least 12" of air space around the entire unit.

The ambient air temperature at floor level is to cold (between 40 - 60 degrees F). Raise the unit up off the floor onto something sturdy enough to handle the weight (including a full tank of water) and the vibration during operation. This happens frequently in basement applications.

Depending on the age of the unit, the refrigeration coolant may need to be recharged.

The humidity sensor has failed and needs to be replaced.

All of the above are where you start troubleshooting and hopefully solving the problem.

Have classic dehumidifier model#CDR4500E. Can't adjust it automaticaly to come on or shut off. Don't understand the keypad fuctions, booklet to confusing.

Your dehumidifier preset default humidity level of 70%. Which is rather high, if you're using the unit in the hot Summer months. You can override this setting and lower the humidity level in increments to as low as 35%. Which is ideal during hot, humid weather. The Air Down button lowers the humidity level.Once the level is set, the unit will cycle ON and OFF as necessary, to maintain the level of humidity.

I have looked at the Owners Manual for you unit, and it's very thorough. But, I can understand, if you're not familiar with how the units work, it could be confusing. Page 5, is very informative on how to operate the unit, as far as setting humidity levels, which is what's important. If the operation of the unit continues to be a problem for you, contact Danby Customer Support 1-800-263-2629 and they can walk you through the procedures, while on the phone with them.

Hop this helped you. Please let me know. Thanks.

Our dehumidifier turns on for only a few seconds, then shuts off.

Wendy, it's probably because the humidity level on the unit is set higher than the humidity level in the house. Keep in mind, the humidity level you set the control to, is not the amount extracted from the air. It's the level you want it to maintain. The higher the percentage level, the more humidity stays in the house. The lower the percentage level, the more humidity it removes, until the lower humidity level is reached. Then the humidifier will automatically shut OFF and/or the unit shuts OFF, because the bucket is full. Once it's emptied and replaced, if the unit needs to continue to extract humidity, it will start running again.

Hope this helped you solve the problem. Please let me know. Thanks.
