ok. hope this helps, use a switch from FANTEC. it'll be called a 3 speed fan switch. CAM #5 No. 21105. this will also say Single Layer 3 or 4 wire application SPLIT continuity function.. THE SPLIT PART IS VITAL. now when wire it. the BLACK wire goes in SLOT 3. ORANGE wire goes in L. PURPLE wire goes in slot 2, ORANGE wire goes in slot 1. IF, and i repeat IF this does not work for you ensure you have a SPLIT CONTINUITY FUNCTION switch. NO MATTER WHAT the BLACK wire WILL go into slot 3. the ORANGE wire WILL go in slot L. switch the orange and purple wires only. ENSURE POWER IS OFF WHEN CONNECTING OR DISCONNECTING WIRES. YOU WILL GET THE SNOT ZAPPED OUTTA YOU IF YOU DON'T. please post if this helps.

SOURCE: i have a 3 way

It takes 2 testers.
699b7e0.jpg regular tester

c7b2876.jpg
Continuity tester has battery and light bulb.

Use regular tester to find Hot wire that feeds old-switch.
Remove old-switch from fan
Strip back wires
Separate wires so they can be tested.
Turn on power.
Test each wire to bare copper wire -or- to green wire -or- to metal part of fan
One of the fan wires will light up tester.
This is the Hot wire.
Mark Hot wire.
Mark which color wire on old-switch went to the hot wire.

Use continuity tester on old-switch.
You know which wire is hot-on-old-switch
Pull chain and test hot-on-old-switch to both of the other wires.
When tester lights up, mark this wire.
Pull chain again and test hot-on-old-switch to both of the other wires.
When tester lights up, mark this wire.
At some point when you pull the chain, the tester will light up both the other wires.
This is the high speed.

Use continuity tester on new-switch.
Repeat the test for old-switch.
Identify which wire will be the Hot wire by process of elimination.
Mark this wire.
Identify high-speed wire.
Pull chain again, and tester lights up on medium speed.
Pull chain again, and tester lights up on low speed
Identify these wires and match pattern to the old-switch

SOURCE: I need a diagram to

If by a 3-way switch, you mean a switch with 4 steps of brilliance: off, low, medium, and high when used with a 3-way bulb. The black wire of the switch is connected to incoming power wiring hot wire. Most often also black. The red switch wire connects to the center contact of the lamp socket. The blue wire connects to the small pin connection that is physically between the center connection and the screw shell of the lamp socket. The screw shell is connected to the incoming white wire of the house wiring.

SOURCE: I just purchased a westinghouse 3-speed fan switch

I do not understand why you would want to open the switch. Are you asking how to get to the switch inside the fan housing? If so, you access the switch by removing either 2 screws on the bottom or 3 screws on the side. You remove the switch by unscrewing the brass finial holding the switch in place by turning counterclockwise. You need only a phillips screwdriver and no special tools. WARNING: Before you disconnect any of the wires write down how they are connected and make sure you have the right switch for your fan. They are not all the same. The BLUE wire is for a light. The red is the "traveler" and the black is power.
Did you use the blue wire without a light? If you did, you wired it hot, full time.

Chain on a JInyou E70469 3 speed fan switch broke. need to replace switch

I have this exact Jin-You E70469 switch. Forget a replacement unless you drop about $20 on ebay. Westinghouse replacement switches did *not* work for this type of switch. Here's the solution that worked for me: CUT THE POWER and test before you touch anything electrical. 1) Diagram the wiring configuration of the switch noting where things go---take pictures. 2) Take out the wires that connect to it. Use a paper clip to spread the clips to pop them out. If you have any wires that come out and back in the switch itself, you can leave them attached. 3) See those pins that keep the housing together? Get a drill bit---or Dremel tool---just slightly bigger than the bottom of the pins. You're going to drill off bottom/rolled over part of those pins. Take it easy. LEAVE THE PINS IN. Do not take the pins out. With the bottoms of the pins ground off gone, now take off the nut that's threaded onto where the chain comes out. Now, carefully pry apart the bottom of the housing. Take a picture. Notice the position. Notice the position. Now, pry the little closure carefully just a little and replace the chain. Put the spring back exactly how it was. NOTICE the little finger in the bottom cover where the spring catches to snap it back. Put the bottom housing on. Holding the whole thing together, try the switch. If it doesn't recoil, pry it apart again, and adjust where the spring catches. This part will annoy some of you. Test again. If it pull ans recoils, you've got it. Put the nut on. Put electricians tape around the housing---don't cover any inputs. Re-insert your wires according to what you had. Put back together.

I have a ceiling fan switch (Westinghouse 77075) that was broken, so I do not know where the wires (black, gray, yellow and purple) went. The speeds are black+gray+yellow, black+gray+purple, and...

I can offer resources:

1) Test switch that was removed, and test for hot connection to narrow down options.

What speed was fan stuck in when switch was removed? Let's say medium speed.
Which connection at fan is hot? Use voltage tester to find hot connection at fan, and match that up with wire-color on switch that was removed.
One and only one wire on 3-speed fan switch connects to hot. And the hot wire is the only wire that connects to each other wire as switch cycles through pull-chain sequence. All pull chain switches follow same sequence: off, low, medium, high.
Let's say old switch was stuck in medium, and you know which color wire connects to hot.
Test switch with continuity tester to see which wire(s) have continuity with hot wire: some switches, it will be 2 wires, and other switches it will be 1 wire. Match where wire(s) were connected, and map that to tests on new switch.

I have a westinghuse fan with light it has four wires on it green, blue, black, and red what are they ie live neutral etc

Question posted under 3-speed switch

1) Are you replacing the 3-speed switch?
This is a field with much discussion because Westinghouse 4-wire fan switches vary.
Process of elimination is needed to find hot line. From there you test each wire to the hot line wire to determine which wire or combination of wires makes up low, medium, and high speed.

http://www.atlantalightbulbs.com/ecart/catalog/westinghouse-6.html

2) Or are you looking at fan connection wiring at ceiling?
Green wire goes to bare ground.
Fan should have hot and neutral.

Hot line should be black.
Neutral should be white.

Red usually goes to light
Blue is normally not there.

Where is the white neutral wire?

Take multimeter set to read ohms and test black wire to each other wire.
Process of elimination should reveal correct wiring.

Typically the old and new switches have no relative relationship to each other .. One way to figure this out is shut off the power and then using the black power wire attach each speed wire to it and turn power back on to observe the speed .. mark the wire with the speed 1, 2, 3, .repeat this untill all the wires are identified .. . then you can put the wires on the appropriate terminations on the new switch ..

Changing the 3 speed switch on my westinghouse ceiling fan

If you are careful and take the hot coming into the fan from the power source and connect it to the colored wires one at a time, you will be able to find which one is high, med. and low. Then connect them. Hot in is L, 1 is low, 2 is med, 3 is high
