From forum comments a number of complaints recently that the chemicals used in water treatment facilities are causing the material the water reservoirs are made from to break down and particles appearing as white flakes in the dispensed water. In that case, replacing the reservoir is usually necessary.
Water contamination cases have made it necessary for treatment plants to improve the water quality.

Most manufacturers originally used a molded plastic water reservoir which is what seems to be breaking down. Many fridge manufacturers are now selling a coil of plastic tubing (like used in the rest of the water system) in place of the molded plastic reservoir. You can see some of the replacement kits at the following link:

It is unknown at the moment if GE has gone to one of these tubing kits but you can see an original molded plastic water reservoir that is used on GE refrigerators at the following link

Viva bottom loading water cooler does not dispense water

Some others addressed this issue on Fixya.com before:
Brett 42 said: the water line is froze.. I took a hair dryer and applied it directly to the dispenser for about 10 minutes. I then held down the buttton for approximately 30 seconds and the water began to drip extremely slowly then faster until a small chunk of ice shot out of the dispenser. I believe the reason this happened was that I the temp of my freezer set lower than the fatory setting.
Mike Smith said: "1) remove the tubing connector behind refrig kickplate . Press for water . If no water comes from tube under refrig , then possibly frozen tank but probably not . Probably bad water inlet valve . ( tank is in the lower potrion of the refrig section behind the crispers ) .
2) if water does shoot out , then your freezer door is frozen which requires leaving door open and tapeing light switch closed and tape plastic around freezer section opening so fridge will continue to operate normally . Thawing freezer door could take a day or 2 . 3) You can plug the hoses back togather and walk by occasionally pressing water untill comes out . Lower your freezer temperature setting also ( could be set for too cold)"

I hope this helps you out!

No Water Coming Out of The Water Dispensor on G E Refrigerator ?

If you are not getting water thru the door dispenser , first thing to check is if you are getting water to the water valve behind the refrigerator . This is the part in the back of the refrig , that the wall water line connects to .
If your ice maker is making normal size cubes , then you ARE getting water TO the water valve .
However , there are 2 coils on the water valve ( G E ) of which 1 is for the ice maker , and , the other , is for the water dispenser .

1 ) Remove the kick plate from the bottom front of the refrig . On some models , the kick plate " snaps " on , and other models , it is held on by a small screw on each side on the top portion of the kick plate .
Once the kick plate is removed , follow the plastic water line from the bottom of the freezer door , about 6 " , to a small coupling . This coupling , has a " ring " on both ends , one of which has to be pushed in as you pull the tubing from the coupler . Once this is accomplished , put a towel under the end of both ends of the tubing , to keep the floor dry .
2 ) Activate the water dispenser arm . If water comes out in a good stream , from the tubing which goes under the refrig , the water line inside the freezer door is frozen . You can either turn the freezer temp warmer for several days for the line to un-thaw or use compressed air ( I have heard using computer cleaner air bottles with the small tube works ) to the water line going up form the bottom of the freezer door to blow out the frozen ice .
Once the ice thaws , G E has a dispenser heater , part # WR49X10173 which comes with installation instructions , to keep this from happening again . If NO water comes out of either hose , then either the water tank inside the bottom of the refrig is frozen ( which would require several days of warmer temperature settings ) OR the refrig could have a bad coil on the water valve , which would require replacing the complete water valve .
I have only come across maybe 1 tank which was frozen , and the rest have been either the line in the door was frozen OR the water valve needed replaced .

Please note....if using compressed air in the door water line , DO NOT USE EXTREME HIGH PRESSURE , as this could burst the line in the door , causing the complete door to have to be replaced . Just the water line inside the door , is not replaceable .

Water dispenser doesn't work, side by side, model # GSS22JEPA BB

At the bottom of the freezer door ( remove the kick plate ) , there will be a water line . Follow this line , about 6 " to a connector . Push in on the white ring and pull out the line , at the same time . Activate the water dispensor pad and see if water flows from the line under the refrig . If it does , then the line in the door is frozen . Either raise the freezer temp for several days , so the line in the door will thaw , or , I have heard using an air tank will blow the ice out of the line in the door . If no water comes from the line under the refrig , while activating the pad , then replace the water valve , behind the refrig , the piece the wall water line connects to on the refrig .

I have cold water but the ice maker is not working, there is no water in the ice maker

The refrig has 2 coils on 1 valve . 1 coil is for water dispensor and the other is for the ice maker . You need to replace the water valve behind the refrig . This is the piece that the wall water line connects to on the refrig .

Orange flakes like a thin scrapes of wax show up in ice and water

There was water in the lines that evaporated and this is the residue that was left. If you gan get to the inlet, put some full strength white vinegar in it and let it soak for 10 - 30 minutes. This will soften and break loose the remaining deposits. Connect the water supply and flush well.
