Question about Mtd LAWN MOWER PART # 17871D FENDER-REAR HYDRO

1 Answer

I have had problems with deck belt tension since the second season that i have owned this mower. MTD brand belts of the proper part # will not cut on the #1 or #2 deck height settings and as they wear, #3 and #4 go also. After a partial season of use the belt will jump off of the pulleys as well. I tried a 96" belt but that caused the blades to not disengage - this mower runs great and would be a good tool except for this one problem.

Remove the deck and blow or wash off all the old grass, remove the belt and make sure all the pulleys turn..its common for that deck design to have the spindles freeze up. If they don't turn that's probably what happened...also make sure all moving linkage is lubrated on the deck.

SOURCE: MTD Lawn Tractor problem

The front belt should be a 954-0280A, rear 954-0370. When you go to higher gears, the front belt should be getting tighter as the vari-speed pulley is moving further back. Remove the shift plate, put the transmission in neutral. Start the engine, put speed selector in highest gear and slowly let out on the clutch. You should be able to see what the problem is. It will do everything the same as if were in gear, except move. Make sure you have the correct belts.

SOURCE: MTD ride on mower, blades turn but it doesnt go

Sounds like the drive belt is either broken or worn out. It is under the frame and you will have to take the deck off to get to it. If you have the model number, from under the seat, go to www.precisionope.com. Look under OEM parts and you will find a part number for the belt.
Good Day.

Mtd manual

MTD uses several different configurations. Electric PTO's are tensioned all the time by an idler pulley on a spring loaded bracket. Manual PTO's with an engagement lever have a movable bracket attached to the lever via a cable that will tension the belt when the lever is engaged. Another configuration is the deck engages when the deck is lowered with the deck height lever and disengaged when the deck is raised. In this case the belt is tensioned by a large spring from the rear deck support bracket to a mount on the transaxle and tension is released by a rod that pull the deck forward when it is raised.

My MTD riding lawnmower is burning thru the new belts I just purchased. The new belts are 954-0371A which replaces 754-0371A. The old style belt lasted 5 years. Even before engaging the clutch, the belt...

My idea is not about the belts, but is about the deck. If the tensioning mechanism on the deck is getting stuck in an intermittant position than the belt may be just tight enough to turn blades while slipping through the pulleys, this may cause enough friction to start melting your belts. If this is the case you will have to remove your mower deck and see what is preventing the mechanism from functioning properly.

I need a diagram of the drive belt and blade belts. How they run above the deck.

Ok.... I have to guess what mower you have. I am going to pass a deck belt link below. The first pitcures that will come up are for John Deere. At the top of the page you will see brands with links to the belt routing. Click on the brand name for your mower and then locate your deck.

John Deere http://opebycrigby.tripod.com/decks/jddeck.html

MTD http://opebycrigby.tripod.com/decks/mtddeck.html

Murray: http://opebycrigby.tripod.com/decks/murdeck.html

The MTD and JD links have most deck belt routing pictures that can equate to other brands.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,

I have a MTD 0675 g Ride on mower, with a 18hp Briggs IC engine. I have recently re bearing'd the cutter deck and fitted a new belt. I cant work out how to adjust the belt-tighten it a little as it slips...

check to see if the belt is in the correct routing, most belt tensioners are able to be fitted with a factory belt in a couple of different routing methods, however only one is right to keep the belt from slipping, look for a belt routing diagram on the mower deck they are the best source fot this information.

MTD JE145H cutting deck keeps throwing belts

Usually the reason a mower deck is throwing its belts is there is a bearing that is starting to sieze up in one of the quill assemblies, which is the assembly that the blade is attached to . Either that or one of the belt tensioner pulleys is starting to go bad, easiest way to check this is remove the drive belt, take off the cover over the tension belt and remove that belt know check all moving parts for tightness or excessive looseness. Hope This Helps You Don

I need a belt diagram for a ranch king king plus also i need to know the size for the main drive belt

Ranch King is a brand name of the manufacturer MTD.

Product manuals with part blow-up diagrams are available from MTD's web site,
http://www.mtdproducts.com/
Models are identified from the model number printed on a label under the mower seat.
The PTO and deck drive belts are shown on one diagram and the transmission drive belt is shown on another. The Form number on my printed Operator's Manual is 770-10526A (22HP, 46in cut) for Hydrostatic 817/818 models.

Parts can be ordered directly from MTD or other distributors on the web.

It is my experience that original brand name MTD belts work best.

The 22HP, 46" mower deck Ranch King Pro has 3 belts:

The drive belt which runs from the engine pulley back to the hydro drive unit to provide over-the-ground propulsion is part #754-0349.

A mower has either an electric PTO or a manual PTO, not both.

The electric PTO belt the provides power to the blade deck (runs around the electric clutch on the engine shaft (activated by electric switch, not the mechanical hand lever that engages the mower deck) is p/n 754-0476 for the 46" deck.

The manual PTO belt the provides power to the blade deck (runs off the pulley on the engine shaft (activated the mechanical hand lever to the left of the steering wheel that engages the mower deck) is p/n 754-0228 for the 46" deck.

The deck belt that goes around the 3 blade spindle assemblies on the mower deck, to drive the grass cutting blades is p/n 754-0349

In my experience, the PTO belt lasts about half a season, the other belts break about every other season when mowing 4 acres weekly.

check for a broken belt tension er or maybe grass clippings under belt area, check for a broken or loose pulley bearing, even a bent shaft on the deck.

I do not think you have been sold the proper belt. It sounds like the belt you purchased is too long. check in your owner manual for the proper belt.
