How do you turn off the ringer, it is much too loud. thanks

please alternate between press volume-up and volume-down buttons until "ringer volume", then you can select this via right-nav key. Then scroll down in the menu until you see the "offf". Thank you.

On the D1680, D1481, and similar phones,
the three levels of ringer loudness plus
"off " are set at the base using the same
[ - ] Volume [ + ] buttons used to adjust
the answering machine message volume.

Pushing the [ + ] and [ - ] keys will
set the ringer to be louder or softer. A
number in the "message counter display"
will report the relative loudness...pushing
[ - ] below level-1 loudness will show
"0" loudness and an announcement of
"Ringer off" will be spoken. From here,
a single push of [ + ] will turn the ringer
on to level-1 and play a ~10 second
sample of the ringer at that volume:
while it is playing the sample ring,
subsequent pushes of [ + ] or [ - ]
will toggle the loudness levels of
( off, 1, 2, 3 ).

Set the RINGER volume switch located at the back of the base to the desired loudness.
OFF - Telephone will not ring.
LO - Sound will be lowest.
HI - Sound will be loudest.

I've worked in the cell phone industry for many years. The big Nokia phones is that most of them never ring very loud. The have a history or blown speakers when they have loud ringers.
Try going under Profiles and changing the ring to outdoors. that will make it ring louder but probably still not loud enough

You didn't indicate exact model of your phone. However I have indicated the procedure used for common Vtech's 5.8Ghz phones

Ringer volume
• With the handset or base in idle (off) mode, press MENU then
press ▲ or ▼ until RINGER VOLUME is shown
• Press SEL. You will hear a sample of the ringer
• Press ▲,▼ or a digit (0 through 6) You will hear a sample of
the new ringer volume and the volume bar will be increased or
decreased each time the setting is adjusted At the lowest setting
the ringer will be turned off and the display will show:
- OR -
• With the handset or base in idle (off) mode, press or of the
volume control will directly go to ringer volume menu
• Press ▲ or ▼ to adjust the ringer volume

WHILE the phone is ringing, push the down arrow key.

If the phone has a dial tone, adjust the ringer loudness (this adjustment is on the bottom of some phones). Also check to see if there is a switch for turning off the ringer--and turn it on.

In some cases, you can't connect more than five phones to a given line or they won't ring properly. If this is your situation, you may have to disconnect one or more phones, or at least turn their ringers off.

the ringer is too loud and the beeps from pressing the buttons are too loud.

No specific knowledge of your model but I have seen many people place tape over the housing holes for the ringer to cut down the volume level on phones where the ringer is too loud.
