Quite clearly the speaker has failed. No I didnt change any settings. It worked one moment then suddenly stopped.
Also, I promise you that it is definitely Apple. Check the specs on the website if you dont believe me :o) the latest models have internal speakers for music.

Well, the internal speaker does not play sounds... It is not possible for the iPod's internal speaker to play music, as it is only capable of making three disctinct sounds:

the clicky noise

the alarm sound

the chirpy noise when you boot into diagnostic mode

You can get those sounds back by going into SETTINGS on the IPOD and turning the sounds back on.

You must have, no "apple ipod" is capable of playing music without external speakers or headphones. If you do have a player that used to play music through the internal speaker and suddenly stopped, then that indicates to me that the speaker has failed inside the unit. Unless somehow you disabled the speaker? I am assuming you didn't change any settings on the player right before it stopped working?

Can you send me a link to a page that talks anything about this internal speaker? I am not seeing it.

    Thanks

Interesting, I guess that is something they added to the 5th gen nano's! Thanks for the info :). In that case it does definitely sound like it has failed.

Sound does not come through speakers just hear the ipod

Did you find a solution to your problem? I have just come across this problem myself.

I have a 16GB 5th Gen iPod, and I am using a compatible (brand new) Hitachi AXM204UK Micro System. The Micro System produces brilliant sound on the CD and USB settings, however when my iPod is docked ( and is responding to charge and the remote control) it doesn't produce sound. Apart from the internal speakers.

If you could help me, that would be brilliant. :)

How to turn off speaker when using headphones

Just had the same issue with my GF's nano so i phoned apple and got the following solution:

Flick the button/switch on the top of the nano on and off 6 times leaving the orange bit not showing.

Now hold down the menu button and the middle button for 15 seconds until an apple icon appears. SORTED!

now the speaker turns off when you plug the headphones in plus rest assured it doesn't reset the ipod and remove your songs.

Sound keeps going on and off on my ipod nano 5th gen without touching it, can anyone help please,Thanks Paul

Is this via the built in speaker, or through the headset? If it is headset, try cleaning out the headphone port of any foreign materials or lint. If issue persists, restore the player through itunes, and test again. Also try to test with a different headset if it is available. If these suggestions do not fix it, you might want to visit your local Genius Bar at the APPLE store near you. You can also call 1-800-APL-CARE for support/replacement help

My guess is it's a faulty upgrade, unless you aren't adjusting the volume after you take the headphones out (when you take headphones out, music stops, and the volume changes).

Try restoring it. If it still isn't working after that, try re-downloading the os 3.1.1 update. It could just be a corrupted file, and it does sound like it.

Cannot play external speakers

Try firmly pressing the iPod into the dock connector. If it works, good. If it doesn't, then your iPod may not have support for the speakers.

I want to know which generation is the Ipod 30G model A1136, thanks

There are two 5th gen iPods, A1136 model is the older 2005 model, not the later 2006 model.

Here is Apples link: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1353#ipodfifth2 which will show the differences, but not by model number. The reason I know this model number is the first 5th gen 2005 is because I have one. Also older 2005 should have '2005' engraved on rear.

Ipod won't play through speakers anymore?

The problem is the internal headphone jack has malfunctioned. To fix the problem first try doing a hard reset, then update your ipod with the newest version for it. Also try blowing it out with canned air. If this does not work and you are still under warranty schedule an appointment with a genius at your local Apple Store. If you don't have a warranty then order an internal headphone jack online and install it yourself, because apple will charge you more than your ipod is worth. Make sure you order it for your model. You can go to youtube and find tons of tutorials on how to install the jack. So good luck. This is a very common problem with ipods and is simple to fix with the right parts.
