I took my gas cap and sanded it down a bit at the time until it was free to turn on and off. Just wrap a rough piece around it and turn it many times. I did get it easier with the sandpaper, but on my other one my belt sander was much faster, just do it slow and even.

If you are using gas with ethanol mix in it ...the ethanol is causing the plastic to swell. Set the cap in the sun and let it dry then see if it goes on better. Then use ethanol free gas.

The gas does makes the cap swell. I have learned that if you put it in the freezer for 5 or 10 minutes, The cap will go on with no problems. Of course you will still have to put some muscle in to it to get the cap off.

That's another good idea....but you gotta be careful and wrap it up or your fish might smell like gas or the cap might smell like fish huh?

How to replace gas cap

Step 1 - Determine Your Type of Gas Cap Before acquiring a new one, think about whether you need a gas cap that locks to prevent a gas thief from stealing your gas. But keep in mind, if you put one of these caps on your car, your spouse or children who put gas in your car will need the gas cap key.
Step 2 - Remove the Cap Retention Ring When you actually replace your gas cap, you may need to remove a retention ring that keeps the cap attached to your car. If you do, you can remove it simply by using a pair of needle-nose pliers. Just slip one tip of those pliers under the ring edge; then close the pliers and pull the ring off the old cap and slip it over the new cap.
Step 3 - Check the Warning Sensor Light Your car may have a sensor light that will illuminate when you change your cap. If so, drive your car a few miles to see if the light goes off. If it doesn't, see your repair mechanic to fix the problem

Tighten gas cap message, replaced gas cap, had emission leak fixed, had termastat leak fixed, still getting tighten gas cap message

"Tighten gas cap" means
  1. That there is an air in-leak somewhere in the vapor recovery system of the car. Hoses and hose connections is a suspect place. So is the electric carbon canister vent valve. OR
  2. It also can mean out of spec gasoline from the discount gas station.
If this was my car I would:
  1. Top up with some decent gasoline.
  2. Have the local shop clear the code and see if it comes back. Maybe do this several times until I am sure all the suspect gasoline is gone.
  3. If it does, and as a last (expensive) resort, have the shop or dealer "smoke test" the emission system for leaks.
Good luck.

How to replace fuel tank filler tube?

Brother John, you've removed as much as you can for access to the filler. Remove the hose clamps/bands that secure the fill tube and vent tube and then remove the screws around the gas cap that secure the fill tube to the body. With the gas cap off, go below and pull the hose and filler neck down and work the hoses lose with a pair of channel lock pliers and sticking a screwdriver between the metal tube and hose to break the seal. Put on the new filler neck and stick it back up in the body and put the screws back in. THEN put the hose clamps back up and tighten them, put the gas cap back on and your done.

Check Gas Cap alarm comes on and engine light is on

You gas cap is not on tight enough to seal causing the Check Engine Light to come on. When you tighten your gas cap you need to tighten it until it clicks at least 5 times, if it is tight than the seal on the gas cap may be bad. Replace with a OEM GM gas cap or a quality replacement that meets OEM specs.

Nozzle leak

If it leaks out of the spout replace valve. If it leaks out of knob post replace packing seal. You might get away with just tightening packing cap.(The 1st nut under handle). Try small increments or you might split packing .

Can't get gas cap back on 1999 e320

Check the metal tabs on the gas cap they should be aligned with the little groves if there not the cap won't go on correctly or close all the way and you will get the engine light coming on. Happen to me and I used a pair of needle nose pliers to move the tabs back into place (wasnt easy) and then it worked fine...Hope this helps you.
P.S my cap got like that after I fueled the car and was in a hurry now I make sure everything lines up before I tighten it.

Can't get my gas cap off 1994 t-bird

You have the plastic gas cap that clicks when it has been tightned enough. The little ratchet mechanisim inside is worn out. Just take a large pair of pliers and pop the top off the cap then you can grab the lower part with the pliers to remove and then throw away. Then just get another fuel cap at your local parts store.
