SOURCE: Connecting front panel wiring to INTEL 845GRG Motherboard

Hello davideiker1, the Intel D845GRG MB manual is shared with another Intel board. (D845GBV MB). Go to this Intel site & download the D845GRG manual; http://support.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/d845grg/sb/cs-008873.htm You'll need Adobe reader to view the manual. Download Adobe from this link; http://www.adobe.com/products/reader/
See page 9 for motherboard layout.
The front panel connectors are shown on page 68, see item C.
On page 69 is, Table 31 shows the pin assignments for the front panel header. Front Panel Header (J9G1).
Pin 1 is power for the hard disk drive led, pin-3 is negative for the hard disk drive. Wire colors coming from the case are important. Look at all of the front case wires. The common color for each 2-pin connector will be ground. In most cases the ground wire is white, except for the internal speaker. Ground for the speaker is normally black. (This motherboards speaker is built into the MB, no hook up is needed).
Pin number 2 is positive for the case power led which lights up as green. Pin 4 is negative for the power led.
The reset switch is a bit different. Pin 5 is negative & pin 9 is positive, however if your case uses a two pin connector than connect pin 7 as ground & pin 9 for positive. The On/Off switch, pin 6 is positive & pin 8 is negative.
If this manual is not what you see on the MB, please advise.

Good luck davideiker1!
Need more information/questions post here.
Thank you for using FixYa.

WIRE ASSIGNMENTS

Red: + 5V / Voltage + / VCC
White: D - / Data - / USB -
Green: D + / Data + / USB +
Black: GND / Voltage - / Ground
Black: S-GND / Over Current / Shielding

The S-GND wire is fatter and can be easily recognized. The connection of S-GND wire to the header pin is optional.

HEADER CONNECTION GUIDES

Diagram 1: On most motherboards, the USB header/pin-out consists of 9 pins arranged in 2 rows, which allows for 2 USB connections (i.e. USB1 and USB2). Normally, the pins for USB1 and USB2 are in seperate rows.
Diagram 2: Simply plug the connector onto the 5-pins row, and make sure that the pin assignments and wire assignments are matched correctly.
Diagram 3: Alternatively, you can plug the connector onto the 4-pins row, and leave the S-GND wire unconnected.
You might have to rearrange the wires to match with the pin assignments, or change the header connector if necessary, depending on the layout of the USB header.
On some motherboards, there is a NC pin in the USB header. You can connect the S-GND wire onto this pin. NC simply means "no connection" and NC pin is an "empty" pin.
2X5 PINS HEADER
Refer to the diagram below, for 2x5 pins header, simply plug the connector onto one row of the pins, and always make sure that pin assignments and wire assignments are matched correctly. You might have to rearrange the wires if necessary.

2X4 PINS HEADER
Refer to the diagram below, for 2x4 pins header, simply plug the connector onto one row of the pins. Please note that there is no S-GND pin in this header. You can leave the S-GND wire unconnected. You might have to rearrange the wires if necessary, in such that the wire assignments and pins assignments are matched correctly.

ACTIVE PINS NOT IN THE SAME ROW

On some motherboards, the 4 active pins are not located in the same row, as shown in the example below:

To connect to this type of USB header, you need to change the header connector to 2x5. Simply rearrange the wires within the 2x5 connector to match with the pin assignments. If the green wire is connected to the USB2+ pin, the white wire must be connected to the USB2- pin. The red wire can be connected to any +5V pin, and the black (GND) wire to any GND pin. If there is no S-GND pin provided, you can leave the S-GND wire unconnected.

hope it helps

I took apart my Compaq Presario V2630US and I don't know where to plug the cable coming from the screen to the motherboard. The cable contains 2 wires one black the other white each has a female plug that...

Not a problem benpanel.

The cable you're describing is the Wireless Antenna cable.
One Black wire, one White wire.

1) ALL power removed from the laptop. AC adapter (Charger) and Battery
2) Observe Anti-Static Precautions

3) Laptop closed, turn it over, open Battery Compartment facing Away from you.
Open the Mini-PCI Compartment Cover.

(Bottom edge of laptop facing you, in the middle)

The Black and White Wireless Antenna cable leads, plug into the Mini-PCI Communications Module.
(Wireless module)

The connectors are designed so they will only plug in one way, and only to the respective connections.

If you would like the Service Manual (Free) let me know in a Comment.

When i try to start system it will no boot up. amber hd light stays on. i opened up hd and replaced board. mother board fairly new. replaced it with rebuilt one. what should i try next?

1) Why was the motherboard replaced?

2) If this is in reference to an HP Pavilion Media Center M1070n, it uses an Intel Pentium 4 Model 520 (2.8GHz) processor.

Did you make sure you plugged the 4-pin ATX +12 Volt power cable, into the motherboard?
This is power for a Pentium 4 processor, and on up.

This is HP Support, and the Motherboard Specifications page, for the HP Pavilion Media Center M1070N,

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00208497&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=426501

Scrolling down the page is an illustration, and a photo of the motherboard.

Below the Processor socket is the Northbridge chip.
(The Northbridge chip, and the Southbridge chip are the motherboard chipset)

Intel i915P MCH

In the motherboard photo, and installed in your computer, the Northbridge chip has an aluminum heatsink sitting on top of it. (Has fins on top of the heatsink)

Going across to the Left, from the top left corner of the heatsink, is a square connector with 4 socket holes.
The female connector on the motherboard, for the 4-pin ATX +12 Volt power cable.

4-pin ATX +12 Volt power cable,

http://www.playtool.com/pages/psuconnectors/connectors.html#atx12v4

Two Yellow 12 Volt wires, two Black Ground wires.
Let's start with this, and go from there.

Need to know where to put wires on hp motherboard

The last clarification that you provided with details on the motherboard and type of computer it came from were perfect!

I work on HP computers, laptops and printers everyday - as that is the only model we use at my company. I can surely help you with this one as I am well versed in breaking down and rebuilding computers. I don't know if there are specific wires that you're unsure of, or if you need help installing all of the wires to the board. Hopefully, this will help get you started.

I located a really detailed layout of your motherboard. You will see one black and white, drawn and labeled diagram of the board as well as a color photo of the board that isn't labeled. You will also find specs on the board as well as information about clearing the BIOS settings and/or BIOS password.

Click this link: Motherboard Specifications, MCP61PM-HM (Nettle)
HP's name for this board is also Nettle. It's pretty explanatory and if you try to connect a wire to the wrong connector on the board, more than likely, the pins won't match and it won't fit.

Hope this helps! Feel free to post any additional questions if you have problems installing the board.

Just use 568-B or 568-A on both ends of the same cable.

Help wiring normal hp compaq eplaced power supply no power

I am assuming this is a desktop and not a laptop. On the power supply you have a number of connectors. A 24 pin connector (like a lego block) or a 20 pin (leg block) with a 4 pin (in the pattern shown on a dice) Look at your motherboard and check whether you have any connectors which match these and plug them in. They only go one way round as they are shaped. You will need to plug in the wide white 4 pin connectors to everything else like your CD, your hard drives. The floppy drive has a separate smaller white connector. If you have a sata drive these are usually black and flat. Basically you need to connect some wires to your motherboard and one power cable to each of your devices, hard drive, CD/DVD, floppy drive. It doesnt matter which one you choose. Just one that will fit. If you have a souped up graphics card there may be a 6 pin connector for that either on the board itself or on the graphics card. The 6 pattern is the same as a 6 on a dice also.
Good luck.

Power switch went bad. need to know which pins attach to which wires

Looking at the front of PC remove the left side panel. Now looking in at the board. There are two rows of pins in the lowest right hand corner of the board. Your PWRSW is your power switch. Its a two pin connector. The ground wire will be black or white. The ground faces to the right & connects at pin 4 counting from right to left. Power switch takes up pin 4&5.
All done. If tech switched the wires by mistake than flip the connector 180*.
