My micro wave stopped heating, smells funny and is louder

It sounds like the magnetron may have either failed or is not being supplied with the extremely high voltage required to run it.

YOUR SAFETY IS PARAMOUNT

This is a job for a professional but if you are safety clued up, here's instruction.
Make sure the !!!!capacitor is discharged!!!!! before attempting any sort of repair.
Check the door interlock switches first then the high voltage diode with either an AVO model 8 or moving coil meter on high resistance range for short circuit, (DVM's won't show the fault!), the capacitor can fail and go short circuit, the feed fuse on the primary of the high voltage transformer and then finally, the magnetron is best checked by substitution.
Hope that helps.

Load test.

A simple safety test.
Place 1/2 litre of water in a glass container. Measure the temperature of the water.
Place in microwave and heat on full power for 1minute.
Measure the temperature after it has stood for 1minute.
If the temperature difference is more than 9 degrees Celcuis the magnetron is working and producing about 700Watts of heat.
If your microwave is labelled with 900 or 1000Watts. That is about right.
If the temperature is less then the magnetron is not working properly and may need replacing.

This a only a rough guide and any doubts you should consult an authorised service agent.

Can you let me know the connection digram of transformer to capacitor with high voltage fuse in a microwave. Make is sharp

Since you posted this under R-1210 / R-1211 / R-1214, I can point you to the service manuals that cover those models here:

http://www.microwavedisplay.com/r1200_r1201_sm.pdf
http://www.microwavedisplay.com/r1210_r1211_sm.pdf

Those models don't have high voltage fuses, but the connection of a high voltage transformer to the capacitor is almost always the same, so they may help you.

The high voltage lead of the HV transformer connects to one side of the capacitor. Unless there's a fuse inline, nothing else is connected to this point. The other side of the capacitor is connected to the anode (non-stripe side) of the high voltage rectifier diode, and to the FA terminal of the magnetron.

If you still need help, feel free to contact me with your full model number.

Here are some links you can use for test help, but read the safety warnings first:

http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/cap_test.html (if it is NOT shorted, it's probably fine)
http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/diode.html (if it is NOT shorted, it's probably fine)
http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/mag_test.html
http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/xformer.html

The average DMM doesn't have a high enough voltage to bias a high voltage diode, which is several diodes is series.

If the diode was not shorted, it was probably okay. They almost always short when they go bad.

I don't advise people on measuring a microwave's high voltage. The voltages can be instantly lethal.

The tech sheet should show you how to measure the resistance of the windings of the high voltage transformer. You know you're getting 120V on the primary.

The capacitor is probably okay because they usually short when they fail, and that would blow the fuse when you hit Start.

Look for corrosion or signs of melting on the FA terminal of the magnetron (and on the other temrinal if someone reversed the wires). Look fro a loose connection at the magnetron.

If these connections are fine, then you probably have a bad magnetron.

Probably the best prices on Whirlpool parts can be had here.

Microwave fuse mystery

AHD_NZ

If it goes dead or blows the breaker when you plug it in or open or close the door, then there's a problem with a door switch or door switch mount.

If it went dead almost immediately after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a shorted high-voltage capacitor.

If it went dead a few seconds after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a failing high-voltage transformer.

Any Whirlpool Microwave Techs out there...Please help a fellow tech

hi mike,

I’m sorry to tell you this but; I wouldn't recommend using a different transformer, even if it's the same size, it could cause serious damage. The HV transformer should only be replaced with the exact replacement part.

Emerson Model MWG9111SL Microwave not always working

ok i just opened mine up on counter and found that the white wire on the high voltage transformer had been loose and melted so i put a new female spade connector on and it works fine. i suspect that from a year of use and humm from transformer had loosen it and gotten hot thus loosing connection and getting dirty causing it to overheat and burn off plastic sheilding. easy fix!!!

Won't heat up

Hi larry,

Would it be posible your not setting the heat, is your microwave a popcorn setting one touch bottom.
It is also posible that the magnetron is not working, could be several factors, bad cap, power supply if it has one and bad magnetron. Also thermistor default may also not letting the magnetron to firer up.
You or going to have to figure how it works. also bad door switch may cause this.
To see were you or going if you know were the magnetron is then you most know that is is supplyed by a transformor, step up, at the primery winding , with a voltmeter set on ac voltage see if the voltage is present when starting the microwave, if the voltage is there 115vac you will notice will pulse on and off depending on your power level setting and there is still no heat then it's your secondary of the transformer that is not working.
This could be bad cap, power board if there is one, bad magnetron. Do not test the secondary voltage unless you understand it's very high.
If there is no voltage present, don't go farther, check your swithes, thermistors.

Regards

bob
