Try replacing all the leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions + IDE,SATA and the ones that attach from your motherboard to hard drive
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty or just replace them they are probably old and faulty ?
good luck

I have a 320 gb acclaim portable hard drive. My mac doesn't read it, the first time I plugged it the lap asked me if I wished to format it and I said yes. Now it doesn't read it, what can I

You formatted the hard drive on your laptop in NTFS and the MAC cannot read and write to this formatted NTFS hard drive.
THE FIX
Format the hard drive using your laptop BUT this time format it in FAT32.
The MAC can read and write to a FAT32 formatted hard disk, so now you can exchange data between the MAC and the Windows laptop.

Hi I have an apple mac laptop and have plugged my new iomega 320gb 2.5 select portable hard drive. The problem is im trying to drag movies accross however it wont let me?

Portable devices such as USB disks (in most UNIX based operating systems) will be mounted as READ-ONLY. Remember the old floppy disk with a slide switch to make them READ-WRITE? same principal.
Try right clicking (MAC uses double finger click together) on the Desktop Icon that appears after you plug in the USB drive... is there an option to select READ-WRITE?
let us know if that was it.

Plug hard drive from pc to mac now i cant open files on my pc and the icons have a short cut icon on them?

It appears to be a problem with the WD hard disk that has data that the PC cannot read.
I suggest you format the WD hard disk.
The WD hard drive must be formatted on a PC in FAT32 for you to exchange data between the MAC and the PC.
This will allow the MAC to see a PC hard disk and write files to the WD that the PC can open.

HI There, I'm in a bit of a panic because I haven't listened to that nagging voice inside lately saying to back up my external hard drive and today for the first time it is suddenly not being recognized...

If it reads fine on your PC then I would suggest to back up all the files from it before you do anything else. Once you've done that, you can right click and run a check disk on the drive see if it fixes any errors. If it does, then that may be the reason why it didn't work on the Mac, if it doesn't then you can try formatting the hard drive on the PC and then it will be like brand new.

you originally used/formatted it to the MAC. MAC will read windows drives, but windows will not read the data files due to the format used.

Install

If it is a USB or Firewire drive, you should be able to just plug it in to the corresponding jack on your iBook. Once you do, the mac may notify you that the drive needs to be initialized (formatted) to be usable, if that drive has not already been formatted for the Mac.

If it has already been formatted, or once you let the Mac initialize it, your drive is ready to use, and is accessible via an icon that will appear on your desktop.
